Older Neighborhoods Around Downtown
Winston and Salem merged into a single city in 1913, and the neighborhoods that grew up around the old town centers, including areas such as West End and Ardmore, still include houses from the early 1900s. Homes of that era were built long before modern energy codes, so it is common to find thin or uneven insulation in the attic, drafty framing, and bare wood floors over a crawlspace or partial basement.
That is not a defect. It is simply what a house built for a different time looks like. It does mean an older Winston-Salem home often has the most to gain from a careful look at the attic floor and the crawlspace, and it means the order of work matters. Air leaks between the living space and the attic are usually sealed before new insulation goes on top, so the insulation can do its job.

Many of these homes have large, reachable attics, which makes blown-in insulation a practical upgrade when the existing layer has compacted or was never deep to begin with. Others have attic ductwork, a bonus room over the garage, or knee walls, where air leaks and thin insulation show up as rooms that run hotter or colder than the rest of the house.
Newer does not automatically mean well insulated. Codes have changed over time and workmanship varies from house to house, so we look at what is actually in your attic rather than assuming from the year the home was built.
