By the early 1940s, the 2020 county survey says, Walkertown's densest group of houses lay south of Harley Drive. Modest bungalows and period cottages, most from the 1920s and 1930s, line Willoughby and Winthrop streets and Friendly Road there, on farmland platted in 1923. In those wired before about 1930, the original circuits may run on porcelain knobs and tubes. ENERGY STAR puts it on its list of problems to fix ahead of any insulation, since contact with insulation can turn it into a fire hazard. An electrician looks at any old circuits in the attic before we add insulation, and a run still in use is left uncovered until it has been dealt with.
After the war, owners of large tracts near the town center turned them into house lots. Lakawanna Drive was divided in 1952 and Bellaire Circle platted in 1951. Side-gable and hip-roofed brick Ranch houses of the 1950s and 1960s went up along both, with more on Avalee and Martin streets and Annie Lane in the 1960s. A Ranch roof is low, so the attic pinches down to almost nothing at its edges. Those edges are hard to reach, and ENERGY STAR warns they can hold very little insulation even when the center is deep. A hip roof has eaves on all four sides. Baffles at each soffit hold an air channel open while the insulation is brought out to the walls.
About 30 percent of Walkertown's homes predate 1970; if your joists show above the insulation, ENERGY STAR says to add more insulation.
In 2010 or later, about 30 percent of Walkertown homes went up; check their air sealing as well as the depth.
Walkertown's center sits about 990 feet above sea level, 5 miles from NOAA's Winston-Salem Reynolds Airport station, the best match for Walkertown. The station's 1991 to 2020 normals average about 3,500 heating and 1,510 cooling degree days a year, so at Walkertown's station, heating needs outweigh cooling.
Readings change over short distances around Walkertown: NOAA's Rural Hall station, 10 miles away, averages about 3,960 heating degree days.
Some 81 percent of Walkertown housing units are detached single-family houses.
From 1990 to 2009, about 25 percent of Walkertown homes were built to codes below ENERGY STAR's target; check their eaves, where ENERGY STAR says insulation is often thinnest.
About 40 percent of Walkertown's housing units predate 1980; nearly all predate the state's 1978 insulation rule too.
In Walkertown, about 68 percent of homes heat with electricity; where that heat is forced air, ducts often run through the attic.
Air sealing comes first, as the EPA advises: wire and pipe holes, wall tops and soffits.

Attic insulation in BethaniaNo. Walkertown has no historic district on the state's National Register list. Its one listing is a single house, the two-story Queen Anne home tobacco maker Thomas A. Crews built in 1891, listed in 1993. That house is also the town's only local historic landmark, so changes to its outside go to the county's Historic Resources Commission. The 2020 county survey found that none of the town's mid-century subdivisions merit the Register. For every other house here, the attic work is shaped by the house itself.
With the floor and the walls around that room, not only the attic above it. The county survey describes subdivisions spreading out from the town center in every direction. Where a newer house has a room over the garage, Building America's guide says that floor gets air sealed. Its insulation is pressed up against the subfloor. The short side walls and any attic beside the room need the same sealing and insulation. We can insulate the garage itself as well.
