Attic insulation in WentworthReidsville grew up on a Civil War railroad and became a tobacco manufacturing city, anchored from the 1910s by a vast American Tobacco Company plant. Its older homes run from Italianate and Queen Anne houses on South Main and Lindsey streets to workers' cottages and 1920s bungalows with upstairs rooms set into the roof.
Reidsville, in Rockingham County, grew from 14,591 people in 2020 to 14,692 in 2025 (Census Bureau estimates), on 14.8 square miles. That makes Reidsville the second-largest town in Rockingham County.
Reidsville has about 7,300 housing units, 17 percent of Rockingham County's; 53 percent of the city's households own their home.

When American Tobacco expanded in the 1910s, prominent local citizens had small frame houses built to rent to the plant's Black workers. Many went up between 1915 and 1930, in clusters across the northern third of the city. The city's 1986 multiple resource nomination describes the usual plan: one room wide, two rooms deep, a story and a half high, with a shed roof over the back room. For the North Washington Avenue group, it describes an upstairs room whose knee walls slope up to a narrow flat ceiling. That shape leaves only a sliver of attic overhead. The wedge-shaped spaces behind those knee walls are often leaky, and the floor cavities under the walls can stand open. We seal and insulate the side wedges and those openings, not only the strip above.
Courtland Place, the city's first planned subdivision, opened in southwest Reidsville in the early 1920s with curving streets and park land. The 1986 nomination notes that bungalows and revival style houses went up there in the 1920s and 1930s, but that most of its building came in the late 1940s and 1950s. Later middle class streets followed near the Pennrose Country Club and along Richardson Drive. The housing figures on this page date about half of Reidsville's homes to before 1970. A kitchen from those years may have a boxed soffit above the wall cabinets with its top open straight into the attic. ENERGY STAR counts these dropped soffits among the big leaks: we rake the insulation aside, cap and seal the opening from above, and lay the insulation back across the top.
About 55 percent of Reidsville's homes predate 1970; if your joists show above the insulation, ENERGY STAR says to add more insulation.
Built from 1940 to 1969, about 45 percent of Reidsville homes often have little insulation.
Reidsville's center sits about 800 feet above sea level, 2 miles from NOAA's Reidsville 2 NW station, the best match for Reidsville. The station's 1991 to 2020 normals average about 3,830 heating and 1,340 cooling degree days a year, so at Reidsville's station, heating needs outweigh cooling.
Some 70 percent of Reidsville housing units are detached single-family houses.
Built from 1970 to 1989, 21 percent of Reidsville homes may hold settled fiberglass; check its depth against the joists.
About 70 percent of Reidsville's housing units predate 1980; nearly all predate the state's 1978 insulation rule too. About 26 percent of Reidsville units sit in buildings of two or more homes, where the attic is often shared.
In Reidsville, 55 percent of homes heat with electricity; where that heat is forced air, ducts often run through the attic.
Air sealing comes first, as the EPA advises: wire and pipe holes, wall tops and soffits.
Duke Energy Carolinas supplies Reidsville's electricity. For gas, Reidsville is in the Rockingham County franchise of Piedmont Natural Gas, and 40 percent of the city's homes heat with piped gas. Duke's free House Call fits many Reidsville homes: 55 percent heat with electricity.

In a Reidsville attic, only wet, moldy or animal-soiled insulation is vacuumed out (ENERGY STAR's test), once the cause is fixed, and after mice that Reidsville attic is sanitized and deodorized; dry, clean insulation stays.

Insulation contractor serving SummerfieldNot through its National Register listing. Listed in 1987, the district takes in about 140 acres: downtown, an industrial area and residential streets to the west and southeast. Register status, the State Historic Preservation Office explains, does not tie the hands of a private owner spending private money. The city also has its own Historic Preservation Commission. If your house sits in a local district or is a landmark it has designated, outside changes need its certificate of appropriateness, while interior arrangement is beyond its reach. Air sealing and insulation are inside work, but check with the city before cutting new roof vents.
Yes, it is one of the first places we look. The 1986 nomination for the North Washington Avenue Workers' Houses describes a brick chimney rising between the front and back rooms, which carries it straight up through the ceiling. ENERGY STAR calls the opening around a chimney a major path for warm air into the attic. It is closed with aluminum flashing pressed into high-temperature caulk, and a metal barrier keeps the insulation off the masonry, with about 2 inches of clearance.
It could: about 37 percent of Reidsville's homes predate 1960. If a Reidsville attic holds a pebble-like gray-brown or silver-gold fill, leave it undisturbed: the EPA says vermiculite may contain asbestos.
