Older homes usually mean less insulation and more air leaks. Farmhouse-style houses in particular often have tall ceilings, attics that were never designed to be finished, and crawlspaces built with plenty of vents. Framing that has settled over the years can leave odd gaps that let air move freely between the living space and the attic.

If a home sits in a low spot, at the bottom of a slope or under heavy shade, the effect can be stronger.
A vapor barrier is the usual starting point, with encapsulation and a dehumidifier as more complete options for a crawlspace that stays damp. If standing water or active leaks are present, those have to be corrected first, and we will say so at the estimate.
