What our insulation company does for North Carolina homes. Most of it happens in the attic.
If the upstairs bedroom hits 80 degrees by 4 pm in July, or the back room never warms up in January, start with the attic. We blow in fiberglass insulation to an even depth, right out to the eaves, so the house holds its temperature.
Insulation that got soaked by a roof leak, or that mice have nested in, can't be fixed by piling more on top. We vacuum the old layer out, sanitize and deodorize after mice, seal the gaps it was hiding and blow fresh fiberglass onto a clean attic floor.
Air you paid to heat or cool slips out through attic gaps, wiring holes and leaky ducts before it reaches the room. We find those leaks and seal them, so the insulation on top can do its job.
Outside walls that feel cold to the touch often have little or nothing inside them. We blow insulation into the closed walls of an existing house, once we know the walls are right for it, and fit batts in open walls before the drywall goes up.
The bonus room over the garage is usually the hardest room in the house to keep comfortable. We insulate the garage ceiling under it, the wall the garage shares with the house and the garage attic, and we seal the air leaks first.
