About Wentworth and Its Homes

Wentworth has held Rockingham County's courthouse since the late 1700s, but with no river landing or rail line it never drew the factories and new rows of houses that other county towns got. Its 2006 land use plan found homes going up mostly one at a time, on larger lots along the roads, with farmland in between.

Wentworth, in Rockingham County, grew from 2,657 people in 2020 to 2,774 in 2025 (Census Bureau estimates), on 14.2 square miles. That makes Wentworth the third-largest town in Rockingham County.

Wentworth has about 1,220 housing units, 3 percent of Rockingham County's; 91 percent of the town's households own their home.

Wentworth Homes and Their Attics

A Courthouse Village That Became a Town in 1998

For two centuries Wentworth was a county seat with no town government of its own. The push to incorporate began in 1996, when Reidsville was planning annexations, and voters approved it in November 1997. The modern town took effect on July 1, 1998, spread across roughly 12 to 13 square miles. By the housing figures on this page, the larger share of its homes dates from 1970 onward. A house begun before January 1, 1978 was never held to the state's insulation standard before move-in, so any insulation in its attic went in by an owner's choice. Among the leak points ENERGY STAR names are the attic hatch, holes bored for wires and pipes, and recessed lights. A can light not marked for insulation contact needs a clear ring of 3 inches around it.

Attic Insulation in Wentworth

About 25 percent of Wentworth's homes predate 1970; if your joists show above the insulation, ENERGY STAR says to add more insulation.

From 1990 to 2009, about 40 percent of Wentworth homes were built to codes below ENERGY STAR's target; check their eaves, where ENERGY STAR says insulation is often thinnest.

The Local Climate

Wentworth's center sits about 740 feet above sea level, 5 miles from NOAA's Eden station, the best match for Wentworth. The station's 1991 to 2020 normals average about 3,980 heating and 1,280 cooling degree days a year, so at Wentworth's station, heating needs outweigh cooling.

Wentworth Insulation FAQs

Do historic rules cover the houses around the Wentworth courthouse?

Not through the National Register. The town's three listings are the county courthouse and jail, Wright Tavern, and the Methodist Episcopal church with its cemetery. None of them is a house or a district. Wentworth does not appear among the commissions on the state's 2023 roster, although the town council has a Historic Preservation Committee. Its 2006 land use plan named a historic district only as an issue to take up. Insulation is inside work. Talk to town hall before any change to the roof or vents.

Our old farmhouse out in Wentworth grew in stages. Could it have more than one attic?

Quite possibly. Rockingham County's 2003 architectural survey found that simple frame houses of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries were still among the commonest house forms in the county. If yours was enlarged over the years, a back ell, a shed room or a closed-in porch may each sit under a roof of its own. Behind each of those roofs can be a pocket of attic, reached separately and insulated differently, or not at all. We open up every section, and new insulation is spread level across each one so no thin patches are left.

Does attic insulation in Wentworth need a permit?

Wentworth Town Hall can say whether Rockingham County, the town itself or another office handles permits in Wentworth; ask before work starts.
