About Mayodan and Its Homes

Mayodan was laid out in the 1890s as the village for Mayo Mills, which began running on the Mayo River in 1896, and it was incorporated in 1899. The company built most of its houses: small one-story frame cottages, most of them on an L-shaped plan.

Mayodan, in Rockingham County, grew from 2,417 people in 2020 to 2,503 in 2025 (Census Bureau estimates), on 2.88 square miles. That makes Mayodan the fourth-largest town in Rockingham County.

Mayodan Homes and Their Attics

L-Shaped Mill Cottages on a Grid of Streets

Rockingham County's architectural survey of 2003 described blocks and blocks of mill housing on Mayodan's streets, most of the cottages nearly identical. The usual plan joins a side-gable wing to a front-gable wing that reaches toward the street. When the Avalon mill upriver burned in 1911, the company moved many of its workers, and their houses, to Mayodan over the next two years. In an L-shaped cottage the attic turns a corner where the two roofs meet, and each wing tapers to low, cramped edges. We measure both wings, not just the part near the hatch, and spread new insulation evenly across both, with no low spots.

Mayodan Insulation FAQs

Did the mill insulate the Mayodan houses it sold to workers?

Nothing we have read says it did. The mill company built and owned most of the town's houses, and in 1955 Washington Mills, as it was then called, sold more than 140 of them to its employees. Since then each owner has kept up a house in their own way, so two cottages built alike can hold very different attics. Before the work starts, the crew looks over both wings, the wiring and any chimney with you.

Can Mayodan's 2016 historic listing stop me from insulating my attic?

No. That listing put the Mayodan Downtown Historic District on the National Register: the business blocks around Main Street and Second Avenue, with the mill cottages mostly outside it. Per the state preservation office, Register status sets no limits for a homeowner paying their own way. Neither the state's 2023 roster of preservation commissions nor the town's board list shows one for Mayodan, so attic work here goes through no design review.

Does attic insulation in Mayodan need a permit?

Mayodan Town Hall can say whether Rockingham County, the town itself or another office handles permits in Mayodan; ask before work starts.
