Attic insulation in DobsonMount Airy boomed after the railroad arrived in 1888, and the granite quarry on its east side made stone a house material here, used for chimneys, porch columns and trim. Its houses run from the railroad boom to postwar ranches, across several National Register districts and one local district.

Mount Airy has no mill village of the usual kind, its 2018 architectural survey found. Worker housing went up instead in small blocks dotted around town, mostly in the 1910s and 1920s. Each block used a few repeated house plans, and many sit south of downtown toward Rockford Street. Two houses from one plan can still differ a lot above the ceiling, so each attic is measured on its own. Look for dark, dirty patches in the old insulation. ENERGY STAR reads them as air filtering up through a leak below. Sealing that leak is the fix, and the darkened fill itself is generally fine to leave in place.
The Country Club Estates Historic District was platted next to the country club in the 1920s and 1930s and built up from about 1930 to 1970. Its 2020 nomination describes 11 one-story ranches, most of brick veneer over a wood frame, among story-and-a-half Minimal Traditional houses. A ranch's shallow roof pitch leaves very little room where the rafters come down onto the outer walls. ENERGY STAR warns that this edge can end up far thinner than the middle of the attic. Soffit vents along it must stay uncovered, so baffles go in first and the insulation is pushed out to the wall behind them.
About 55 percent of Mount Airy's homes predate 1970; if your joists show above the insulation, ENERGY STAR says to add more insulation.
Built from 1940 to 1969, 36 percent of Mount Airy homes often have little insulation.
Mount Airy's center sits about 1,100 feet above sea level, 3 miles from NOAA's Mount Airy 2 W station, the best match for Mount Airy. The station's 1991 to 2020 normals average about 4,410 heating and 970 cooling degree days a year, so at Mount Airy's station, heating needs outweigh cooling.
Readings change over short distances around Mount Airy: NOAA's Danbury station, 24 miles away, averages about 3,910 heating degree days.
Some 58 percent of Mount Airy housing units are detached single-family houses.
Built from 1970 to 1989, 24 percent of Mount Airy homes may hold settled fiberglass; check its depth against the joists.
About 70 percent of Mount Airy's housing units predate 1980; nearly all predate the state's 1978 insulation rule too. About 36 percent of Mount Airy units sit in buildings of two or more homes, where the attic is often shared.
In Mount Airy, 79 percent of homes heat with electricity; where that heat is forced air, ducts often run through the attic.
Air sealing comes first, as the EPA advises: wire and pipe holes, wall tops and soffits.

Attic insulation in ElkinNot for the insulation itself. The city has one local historic district, set up in July 1992 inside the larger National Register district, plus one local landmark. There, any exterior change needs a certificate of appropriateness from the Historic Preservation Commission, and the city asks owners to check with its Planning Department first. State law gives such commissions no say over interior arrangement, and attic work happens indoors. New vents cut into the roof or soffits alter the exterior, so clear those with the Planning Department before they go in.
Nothing obliged the builders to. The blocks of worker housing date mainly from the 1910s and 1920s. In North Carolina the rule tying a new house's occupancy to insulation standards reaches only homes whose construction began in 1978 or later. The survey says nothing about insulation in these houses, so we take depth readings across the whole attic, and old wiring and any chimney get a look, before a new layer goes down.
Duke Energy's Smart $aver Insulate and Seal is the one to check: a rebate for attic insulation done together with air sealing, and a separate one for duct sealing, when the attic starts at R-19 or less; a contractor in Duke's Smart $aver network must do the work, and Insulation Pros is an approved Duke Energy trade ally. Check its current terms. The Surry County page lists every other program.
It could: about 42 percent of Mount Airy's homes predate 1960. If a Mount Airy attic holds a pebble-like gray-brown or silver-gold fill, leave it undisturbed: the EPA says vermiculite may contain asbestos.
Compare written estimates for your Mount Airy attic listing air sealing, any removal and the added depth; for Duke Energy's rebate the contractor must be in Duke's network, and Insulation Pros is an approved Duke Energy trade ally.
