The Local Climate

East Bend's center sits about 1,060 feet above sea level, 6 miles from NOAA's Yadkinville 6 E station, the best match for East Bend. The station's 1991 to 2020 normals average about 4,200 heating and 1,150 cooling degree days a year, so at East Bend's station, heating needs outweigh cooling.

East Bend sits about 200 feet above the station, so expect slightly colder winters.

East Bend Insulation FAQs

Does the Davis Brothers Store listing affect the old houses near it in East Bend?

No. The 1913 store was put on the National Register on its own in 1994, not as part of a district, so the listing reaches no further than that one property. Even for the store, the state's preservation office says a listing puts no limits on an owner paying privately for the work. And the office's 2023 roster shows no commission of any kind for Yadkin County. Whether to insulate the house beside it is the owner's decision alone.

Our big two-story house off Main Street feels drafty upstairs. Could the framing be the cause?

It can be. Some frame houses of East Bend's early decades may be balloon framed, and you cannot tell from the street. A building-science training text from Iowa notes that most balloon-framed walls lack top and bottom plates. A wall like that can stand open to the attic and act as a chimney for heated air. If a look from above finds open wall cavities, we block and seal the top of each one before any insulation is added over the ceiling.

Could the old insulation in an East Bend attic be vermiculite?

It could: about 30 percent of East Bend's homes predate 1960. If an East Bend attic holds a pebble-like gray-brown or silver-gold fill, leave it undisturbed: the EPA says vermiculite may contain asbestos.

Does attic insulation in East Bend need a permit?

East Bend Town Hall can say whether Yadkin County Central Permitting, the town itself or another office handles permits in East Bend; ask before work starts.
