Insulation contractor serving Mount AiryDobson was made the Surry County seat in the early 1850s and incorporated in 1891, and its 1916 courthouse is the only National Register building in town. Published surveys say almost nothing about Dobson's houses, so advice for an attic here starts from the age and build of that particular house.
Dobson, in Surry County, grew from 1,464 people in 2020 to 1,474 in 2025 (Census Bureau estimates), on 2.03 square miles. That makes Dobson the third-largest town in Surry County.
Dobson has about 660 housing units, 2 percent of Surry County's; about 49 percent of the town's households own their home.

Census Bureau estimates for Dobson, 2020 to 2024 (± margin of error).
About 30 percent of Dobson's homes predate 1970; if your joists show above the insulation, ENERGY STAR says to add more insulation.
From 1990 to 2009, about 35 percent of Dobson homes were built to codes below ENERGY STAR's target; check their eaves, where ENERGY STAR says insulation is often thinnest.
Dobson's center sits about 1,260 feet above sea level, 8 miles from NOAA's Mount Airy 2 W station, the best match for Dobson. The station's 1991 to 2020 normals average about 4,410 heating and 970 cooling degree days a year, so at Dobson's station, heating needs outweigh cooling.
Dobson sits about 200 feet above the station, so expect slightly colder winters.
About 58 percent of Dobson housing units are detached single-family houses.
Built from 1970 to 1989, about 30 percent of Dobson homes may hold settled fiberglass; check its depth against the joists.
About 50 percent of Dobson's housing units predate 1980; nearly all predate the state's 1978 insulation rule too. About 39 percent of Dobson units sit in buildings of two or more homes, where the attic is often shared. Renters hold about 51 percent of Dobson's occupied homes, so many attic decisions rest with landlords.
In Dobson, about 77 percent of homes heat with electricity; where that heat is forced air, ducts often run through the attic.
Air sealing comes first, as the EPA advises: wire and pipe holes, wall tops and soffits.
Duke Energy Carolinas serves most of Dobson, Surry-Yadkin EMC its edges; your bill says which. For gas, Dobson is in the Surry County franchise of Frontier Natural Gas, whose mains may not reach every street in Dobson. Duke's free House Call fits many Dobson homes: about 77 percent heat with electricity. Oil or kerosene, bought by the delivery, heats 6 percent of homes in Dobson.

In a Dobson attic, only wet, moldy or animal-soiled insulation is vacuumed out (ENERGY STAR's test), once the cause is fixed, and after mice that Dobson attic is sanitized and deodorized; dry, clean insulation stays.

Attic insulation in JonesvilleNot that the state records show. The one National Register listing inside the town limits is the Surry County Courthouse, built in 1916. A listed two-story frame house with 1799 painted on its chimney stands outside town, in the Fisher River bottom. Surry County has a single preservation commission on the state's 2023 list, and it serves Mount Airy. Historic status puts no hurdle in front of insulating a private home here.
The wiring and the roof, first. ENERGY STAR cautions that knob-and-tube wiring, used in houses wired before about 1930, can become a fire hazard where insulation lies against it. An electrician has to inspect and correct it before any insulation goes near it. Insulation that is damp or matted, or stained by water, points to a leaking roof, and a roofer repairs that before we start. A town that was incorporated in 1891 can have houses old enough for either problem.
It could: about 20 percent of Dobson's homes predate 1960. If a Dobson attic holds a pebble-like gray-brown or silver-gold fill, leave it undisturbed: the EPA says vermiculite may contain asbestos.
Dobson Town Hall can say whether Surry County Inspections, the town itself or another office handles permits in Dobson; ask before work starts.
