About Erwin and Its Homes
Erwin was built from 1901 as the company town of Erwin Mills on the Cape Fear River, first under the name Duke, and was renamed in the mid-1920s. Most of its older houses are mill houses from two building waves, one at the start and one in the mid-1920s.
Erwin, in Harnett County, grew from 4,509 people in 2020 to 4,956 in 2025 (Census Bureau estimates), on 4.21 square miles. That makes Erwin the fourth-largest town in Harnett County.
Erwin has about 2,100 housing units, 4 percent of Harnett County's; about 71 percent of the town's households own their home.

Erwin Homes and Their Attics
L-Shaped Mill Houses From the First Building Wave
Carpenters started the first Erwin mill houses in January 1901, using local timber. The county survey found that the most common type is a one-story gable-front-and-wing house, L-shaped, set on a continuous brick foundation. That type is most concentrated northwest of the mill along 16th and K streets, with more on Denim Drive and East and West E Street. An L-shaped house has two roofs that meet in a valley, and the attic follows them. We check depth in both legs of the L and into the tight corner where they join, so the finished layer is level from one end of the house to the other.
Craftsman Mill Houses South of West E Street
The second wave, around 1926 and 1927, added Craftsman houses concentrated south of West E Street. Those built for mill hands are one story under a hip roof or a low-pitched side gable. They have hip or shed dormers and often one or two chimneys on the outside end walls. With a roof that shallow, there is little height where rafters meet the walls, and ENERGY STAR warns that insulation can run thin at that edge. Soffit vents there are never buried, and rafter baffles keep air moving from the eaves.
Attic Insulation in Erwin
About 55 percent of Erwin's homes predate 1970; if your joists show above the insulation, ENERGY STAR says to add more insulation.
Built from 1940 to 1969, about 30 percent of Erwin homes often have little insulation.
The Local Climate
Erwin's center sits about 190 feet above sea level, under a mile from NOAA's Dunn 4 NW station, the best match for Erwin. The station's 1991 to 2020 normals average about 2,910 heating and 1,970 cooling degree days a year, so Erwin attics work in both seasons.
Readings change over short distances around Erwin: NOAA's Lillington station, 10 miles away, averages about 3,320 heating degree days.
Homes by Age: What It Means for the Attic
Some 87 percent of Erwin housing units are detached single-family houses.
Built before 1940, 24 percent of Erwin homes can hide knob-and-tube wiring and vermiculite, jobs for an electrician and an asbestos contractor first.
About 65 percent of Erwin's housing units predate 1980; nearly all predate the state's 1978 insulation rule too.

Erwin Insulation FAQs
Erwin Mills put electric lights in its houses in the 1920s. Is that wiring a concern?
It has to be checked before any insulation goes in. An account the county survey quotes says that in 1926 every house in town was being fitted with water, sewer and electric lights. Lights put in then could well be knob-and-tube, a type ENERGY STAR lists as a fire hazard where insulation surrounds it. Some houses may have been rewired since. An electrician tells us which yours is, and any circuit still in use stays clear of insulation.
Is the old mill village in Erwin a listed historic district?
No. The National Register district in Erwin is the downtown commercial one, listed in 2015. The 2008 county survey put an Erwin mill village district on the state's Study List, which means it looked eligible, not that it is listed. The company sold its houses off to private owners in the 1950s and 1960s. No local preservation commission for Harnett County appears on the state's 2023 roster, so attic work needs no historic approval.
Could the old insulation in an Erwin attic be vermiculite?
It could: about 45 percent of Erwin's homes predate 1960. If an Erwin attic holds a pebble-like gray-brown or silver-gold fill, leave it undisturbed: the EPA says vermiculite may contain asbestos.
Does attic insulation in Erwin need a permit?
Erwin Town Hall can say whether Harnett County Development Services, the town itself or another office handles permits in Erwin; ask before work starts.
