About Dunn and Its Homes

Dunn began in 1886, when lots along the new Wilmington and Weldon line were auctioned off a caboose, and it was incorporated the next year. The county survey calls its older streets the most varied in Harnett County, from an 1870s Italianate house to a steel prefab of the late 1940s.

Dunn, in Harnett County, grew from 8,439 people in 2020 to 8,814 in 2025 (Census Bureau estimates), on 7.08 square miles. That makes Dunn the second-largest town in Harnett County.

Dunn Homes and Their Attics

Large Early 1900s Houses in Central Dunn

The 2008 Harnett County survey describes a Central Dunn residential district south of Cumberland Street, roughly between West Divine and West Pope streets, full of large, stylish houses. The examples it describes run from 1908 into the 1920s, and several have hip roofs over the main block, one of them enlarged by two-story and one-story wings at the back. A brick foursquare there from about 1915 has four interior chimneys. Under a roof like that, every chimney and every wing is its own job. Where a chimney rises through the ceiling, its gap gets metal and heat-rated caulk before any insulation goes down, and each wing attic is measured separately.

Electric Power in Dunn Homes From 1902

Dunn had electric streetlights by 1888, and in 1902 the town built its own generating plant and began selling power to homes, the commercial district's nomination records. So a Dunn house from the first decades of the century may have been wired very early, possibly with knob-and-tube. The county survey notes that old houses across Harnett County have often had their wiring updated, but nobody should assume it. ENERGY STAR treats pre-1930 knob-and-tube as a fire hazard when insulation buries it. An electrician confirms whether any of it is still live before we add insulation.

Craftsman Houses With Rooms Under Big Dormers

Several of the Central Dunn houses in the survey put living space in the roof. The survey describes a Craftsman house on South Orange Avenue with a steep side-gable roof and large gable dormers front and back. A shingled house of about 1916 on West Pearsall Street has one very wide shed dormer, and a story-and-a-half Tudor Revival house stands on North Ellis Avenue. Where upper rooms like these have knee walls, the low attic spaces behind them are a known air leak. Each one gets sealed and insulated, with the floor framing beneath it.

Attic Insulation in Dunn

Some 44 percent of Dunn's homes predate 1970; if your joists show above the insulation, ENERGY STAR says to add more insulation.

Built from 1970 to 1989, 37 percent of Dunn homes may hold settled fiberglass; check its depth against the joists.

The Local Climate

Dunn's center sits about 210 feet above sea level, 5 miles from NOAA's Dunn 4 NW station, the best match for Dunn. The station's 1991 to 2020 normals average about 2,910 heating and 1,970 cooling degree days a year, so Dunn attics work in both seasons.

Readings change over short distances around Dunn: NOAA's Lillington station, 14 miles away, averages about 3,320 heating degree days.

Dunn Insulation FAQs

Is my Dunn house in a historic district that needs approval for attic work?

Probably not. Dunn's one National Register district, listed in 2009, is downtown and commercial, with just two houses on East Edgerton Street. The Central Dunn residential district appears in the county survey on the state's Study List, which marks it as potentially eligible, not listed. Even Register listing places no limit on a private owner using private money. The state's 2023 roster names no local commission in Harnett County, but ask the city before changing anything outside.

Did anyone require insulation when my older Dunn house was built?

Not if it went up before 1978. The state rule on insulation at move-in covers homes begun on or after January 1, 1978, and nothing earlier. Fewer than half of Dunn's homes date from before 1970, the housing figures show, but a house from the 1970s predates the rule too. Whatever is in your attic now is what builders and later owners chose to put there. The crew measures it in several places with you on the day of the work.

Could the old insulation in a Dunn attic be vermiculite?

It could: about 29 percent of Dunn's homes predate 1960. If a Dunn attic holds a pebble-like gray-brown or silver-gold fill, leave it undisturbed: the EPA says vermiculite may contain asbestos.

Does attic insulation in Dunn need a permit?

Dunn City Hall can say whether Harnett County Development Services, the city itself or another office handles permits in Dunn; ask before work starts.
