Linden Homes and Their Attics
Two Old Houses Across the Harnett Line
Across the county line, the state's 2008 study of historic houses in Harnett County describes two in the Linden vicinity. One is a two-room house from the early 1800s near the Little River, framed with posts and girts. A full-width shed-roof extension at its back was probably added later in that century. The other is a Queen Anne cottage built around 1885 and enlarged in 1910, an L-shaped house with several wings. A house that grew in stages like these has a roof for each stage, and each roof can hide an attic of its own. We open every one and fill it evenly, with no thin spots.

The Local Climate
Linden's center sits about 120 feet above sea level, 6 miles from NOAA's Dunn 4 NW station, the best match for Linden. The station's 1991 to 2020 normals average about 2,910 heating and 1,970 cooling degree days a year, so Linden attics work in both seasons.

Linden Insulation FAQs
Is anything in Linden on the National Register?
No property within the corporate limits. Ellerslie, which the state files under Linden vicinity, stands beyond them. The former Linden School went onto the state's Study List in 2002, a step short of a listing, and a 2024 county survey report used it as its cover photo. A listing would not tie your hands anyway: the state preservation office says it places no limits on an owner paying privately.
My old house here has hardly any attic vents. Does that matter?
Yes, and it gets settled before more insulation goes in. ENERGY STAR lists little or no attic ventilation among the problems to correct first. Outside air should enter low at the soffits and leave high at the ridge or gable ends, and baffles hold insulation back from the soffit openings. Cutting in new vents is a separate job that may call for a roofer. In a house older than the town's 1913 charter, mention the vents when you call, since the roof framing may need a closer look first.
Does attic insulation in Linden need a permit?
Linden Town Hall can say whether Cumberland County Building Inspections & Permitting, the town itself or another office handles permits in Linden; ask before work starts.
