Lillington Homes and Their Attics

Queen Anne Houses South of Front Street

The state's 2008 survey of Harnett County calls the area between Front and McNeil streets, around 8th, 9th and 10th, Lillington's oldest neighborhood. It describes Queen Anne houses of about 1890 to 1900 with interior chimneys, one with two and the old Atkins House, converted to the town hall, with three. A two-story house of about 1890 has a rear ell under its own hip roof. Where a chimney passes up through the attic floor, there is an opening around the masonry. ENERGY STAR calls for aluminum flashing and heat-resistant caulk to close it, with a metal dam holding insulation 2 inches off the brick. A rear ell under a separate roof can mean a second attic, and we check it as well.

Attic Insulation in Lillington

About 25 percent of Lillington's homes predate 1970; if your joists show above the insulation, ENERGY STAR says to add more insulation.

In 2010 or later, about 45 percent of Lillington homes went up; check their air sealing as well as the depth.

The Local Climate

Lillington's center sits about 190 feet above sea level, under a mile from NOAA's Lillington station, the best match for Lillington. The station's 1991 to 2020 normals average about 3,320 heating and 1,680 cooling degree days a year, so at Lillington's station, heating needs outweigh cooling.

Readings change over short distances around Lillington: NOAA's Dunn 4 NW station, 9 miles away, averages about 2,910 heating degree days. NOAA estimated part of the Lillington station's normals from nearby stations, so treat them as approximate.

Lillington Insulation FAQs

Is the old part of Lillington a listed historic district?

Not a listed one. The 2008 Harnett County survey described a Lillington Historic District south of Front Street and put it on the National Register study list. That marks a district as potentially eligible, not as listed. The state's current register list shows no property in town, and its 2023 roster of preservation commissions has no entry for Harnett County. So no historic rule governs the attic in your house. The checks every older house needs before insulation still apply.

Why does the bonus room over my Lillington garage run hot and cold?

Because unheated space surrounds it on several sides. Census figures put most of Lillington's housing in 1970 or later. If yours is one of the newer houses with a room above the garage, the trouble usually lies in what touches it. Building America advises sealing the air paths through the garage ceiling below the room, with insulation pressed up against the subfloor. ENERGY STAR adds the short side walls and the attic pockets behind them, which often leak. We seal and insulate those spaces, and garage insulation is a service we offer as well.

Could the old insulation in a Lillington attic be vermiculite?

It could: about 20 percent of Lillington's homes predate 1960. If a Lillington attic holds a pebble-like gray-brown or silver-gold fill, leave it undisturbed: the EPA says vermiculite may contain asbestos.

Does attic insulation in Lillington need a permit?

Lillington Town Hall can say whether Harnett County Development Services, the town itself or another office handles permits in Lillington; ask before work starts.
