Attic insulation in GibsonvilleWhitsett grew up around the Whitsett Institute, a private preparatory school that ran from 1884 to 1919, and became an incorporated town in 1991. Its historic district is a loose ring of teachers' homes and boarding houses built between 1894 and 1921 around the old school site.
Whitsett, in Guilford County, grew from 587 people in 2020 to 606 in 2025 (Census Bureau estimates), on 2.58 square miles.
Whitsett has about 290 housing units; 90 percent of the town's households own their home.

Census Bureau estimates for Whitsett, 2020 to 2024 (± margin of error).
The 1999 nomination says most of the district's houses were homes for the school's teachers, boarding houses or merchants' homes, and thirteen were built from 1900 to 1908. Several are Queen Anne houses whose hipped roofs are broken by cross gables, and the inventory records interior chimneys in several houses. A roof like that covers one main attic plus smaller pockets under each gable, some of them hard to reach. Each pocket gets the same even layer, with no thin spots. Any chimney rising through the ceiling first has its gap flashed with aluminum and sealed with heat-resistant caulk.
About 45 percent of Whitsett's homes predate 1970; if your joists show above the insulation, ENERGY STAR says to add more insulation.
Built from 1940 to 1969, about 35 percent of Whitsett homes often have little insulation.
Whitsett's center sits about 680 feet above sea level, 7 miles from NOAA's Burlington Fire Station 5, the best match for Whitsett. The station's 1991 to 2020 normals average about 3,290 heating and 1,650 cooling degree days a year, so at Whitsett's station, heating needs outweigh cooling.
With about 290 housing units in Whitsett, read the figures as rough proportions.
Built from 1970 to 1989, about 30 percent of Whitsett homes may hold settled fiberglass; check its depth against the joists.
About 65 percent of Whitsett's housing units predate 1980; nearly all predate the state's 1978 insulation rule too.
In Whitsett, about 48 percent of homes heat with electricity and about 35 percent with piped gas; forced air from either moves through ducts.
Air sealing comes first, as the EPA advises: wire and pipe holes, wall tops and soffits.
Duke Energy supplies Whitsett's electricity. For gas, Whitsett is in the Guilford County franchise of Piedmont Natural Gas, and about 35 percent of the town's homes heat with piped gas. Duke's free House Call fits many Whitsett homes: about 48 percent heat with electricity.

In a Whitsett attic, only wet, moldy or animal-soiled insulation is vacuumed out (ENERGY STAR's test), once the cause is fixed, and after mice that Whitsett attic is sanitized and deodorized; dry, clean insulation stays.

Attic insulation in AlamanceThe National Register listing does not. Holly Gate was listed on its own in 1980 and the district in 1999. The state preservation office says that kind of listing puts no strings on owners who keep up their own houses with their own money. The state's 2023 roster of preservation commissions lists none for Whitsett. Attic insulation is inside work. If outside changes such as new vents come up, ask the town, which has its own planning board.
It can. The nomination describes one house of 1894 built with a wing just for students, and other family homes where students boarded. A wing under its own roof may hide a separate attic that is easy to miss, so we look for it. Houses of that age also come before 1930, the line ENERGY STAR draws for knob-and-tube wiring. Any such wiring is checked by an electrician before insulation goes near it.
It could: about 30 percent of Whitsett's homes predate 1960. If a Whitsett attic holds a pebble-like gray-brown or silver-gold fill, leave it undisturbed: the EPA says vermiculite may contain asbestos.
Whitsett Town Hall can say whether Guilford County Inspections, the town itself or another office handles permits in Whitsett; ask before work starts.
