Attic insulation in LocustStanfield, in southwestern Stanly County, took its name from an engineer on the Raleigh to Charlotte rail line finished through it in 1912, and the legislature chartered the town in 1955. Its oldest houses go back to the first few years after the trains began running.

A 1972 local history, reprinted on the town's website, dates the first stores and homes to the years right after the line was finished in 1912. It records several new houses in 1914 and more in the early 1920s, and one early store with living quarters upstairs. A house from those decades has passed its hundredth year, and its wiring may be as old as the walls. Porcelain knobs and cloth wire on the joists mean knob-and-tube, a system ENERGY STAR links to the years before 1930. An electrician checks whether it is live before insulation covers any of it. Where it is live, that part of the attic stays open.
If the joists show above the insulation in a Stanfield attic, ENERGY STAR says to add more insulation.
From 1990 to 2009, about 40 percent of Stanfield homes were built to codes below ENERGY STAR's target; check their eaves, where ENERGY STAR says insulation is often thinnest.
Stanfield's center sits about 610 feet above sea level, 15 miles from NOAA's Concord station, the best match for Stanfield. The station's 1991 to 2020 normals average about 3,290 heating and 1,760 cooling degree days a year, so at Stanfield's station, heating needs outweigh cooling.
About 89 percent of Stanfield housing units are detached single-family houses.
Built from 1940 to 1969, before the state's 1978 insulation rule, about 25 percent of Stanfield homes often have little insulation.
In Stanfield, about 85 percent of homes heat with electricity; where that heat is forced air, ducts often run through the attic.
Air sealing comes first, as the EPA advises: wire and pipe holes, wall tops and soffits.
Duke Energy serves most of Stanfield, Union Power Cooperative its edges; your bill says which. For gas, Stanfield is in the Stanly County franchise of Piedmont Natural Gas, whose mains may not reach every street in Stanfield. Duke's free House Call fits many Stanfield homes: about 85 percent heat with electricity. Bottled or tank gas, bought by the delivery, heats 8 percent of homes in Stanfield.

In a Stanfield attic, only wet, moldy or animal-soiled insulation is vacuumed out (ENERGY STAR's test), once the cause is fixed, and after mice that Stanfield attic is sanitized and deodorized; dry, clean insulation stays.

Attic insulation in FairviewIt can, when the box is open on top. ENERGY STAR names dropped soffits among the spots where room air leaks most into an attic, and loose fill lying over one can hide the hole. From the attic we push that fill aside, cap the opening and seal its edges. The old fill is spread back over the capped box, and only then is the new layer blown in.
No. Nothing in town appears among the state's Register listings for Stanly County, and the HPO roster of local boards, dated 2023, names no commission here. The town's 2022 land use plan does ask that new buildings downtown match the style of its early years. That guides new construction in the town center. It has nothing to say about the inside of an existing house, where attic insulation and air sealing are done.
Stanfield Town Hall can say whether Stanly County Central Permitting, the town itself or another office handles permits in Stanfield; ask before work starts.
