The town's own history says its limits barely moved for some sixty years after 1915. Then, as growth from Charlotte spread outward, subdivisions around the edge were annexed. By the census count behind this page, homes from before 1970 make up less than half of the town's stock. So its houses range from the railroad decades to the recent spread, and their attics vary with their ages. In a newer one, look up at the ceiling lights first. ENERGY STAR keeps insulation 3 inches back from recessed cans that are not rated IC, while IC-rated fixtures may be covered.
About 35 percent of Oakboro's homes predate 1970; if your joists show above the insulation, ENERGY STAR says to add more insulation.
Built from 1940 to 1969, about 30 percent of Oakboro homes often have little insulation.
Oakboro's center sits about 520 feet above sea level, 14 miles from NOAA's Albemarle station, the best match for Oakboro. The station's 1991 to 2020 normals average about 3,280 heating and 1,600 cooling degree days a year, so at Oakboro's station, heating needs outweigh cooling.
Some 96 percent of Oakboro housing units are detached single-family houses.
In 2010 or later, about 25 percent of Oakboro homes went up; check their air sealing as well as the depth.
About 45 percent of Oakboro's housing units predate 1980; nearly all predate the state's 1978 insulation rule too.

Attic insulation in MidlandNot that the state lists. The State Historic Preservation Office's roster of National Register properties has no entry for this town or its vicinity. Among the county's entries on the office's 2023 list of preservation commissions, only Albemarle has one. Older houses here still deserve care, but no historic review applies to attic work in this town.
Not necessarily, and we do not assume it. The town's history says the Oakboro Cotton Mill opened in 1923 and ran for nearly 50 years before it was sold. We found no published record of housing the mill built, though. So the house itself tells us more than the mill does: how deep its attic insulation runs, how old its wiring is, and where air leaks through its ceiling.
It could: about 30 percent of Oakboro's homes predate 1960. If an Oakboro attic holds a pebble-like gray-brown or silver-gold fill, leave it undisturbed: the EPA says vermiculite may contain asbestos.
Oakboro Town Hall can say whether Stanly County Central Permitting, the town itself or another office handles permits in Oakboro; ask before work starts.
