About Fairview and Its Homes
Fairview, once called Benton Crossroads, spreads out from the Highway 218 and Highway 601 crossing in northern Union County and incorporated in 2002. Its town historian tells of farm families raising cotton, grain and poultry, but almost nothing in print describes how their houses were built.

Attic Insulation in Fairview
About 20 percent of Fairview's homes predate 1970; if your joists show above the insulation, ENERGY STAR says to add more insulation.
From 1990 to 2009, about 35 percent of Fairview homes were built to codes below ENERGY STAR's target; check their eaves, where ENERGY STAR says insulation is often thinnest.
The Local Climate
Fairview's center sits about 530 feet above sea level, 11 miles from NOAA's Monroe 2 SE station, the best match for Fairview. The station's 1991 to 2020 normals average about 3,200 heating and 1,740 cooling degree days a year, so at Fairview's station, heating needs outweigh cooling.

Fairview Insulation FAQs
Was our family farmhouse ever put on a historic list?
Nothing in the state files says so. The State Historic Preservation Office has nothing here on its National Register list, and its 2023 directory of local preservation commissions has no board for this town. Union County does keep a county preservation commission, so if you wonder whether your land was ever named a county landmark, the county can say. The town historian's work collecting memories of the old community sets no rules on anyone's house.
Our old Fairview farmhouse has a brick chimney through the ceiling. What happens there?
The chimney gets its own treatment before the attic floor is covered. ENERGY STAR has the gap around it closed with lightweight aluminum flashing and a caulk made for high heat, with foam ruled out. Then a sheet metal dam goes around it to hold insulation back. It notes that codes usually want 2 inches of clearance at masonry. Churches here date back to 1832, so a farmhouse in the area could be old enough for this. A stack built against an end wall, outside the frame, does not pass through the ceiling.
Does attic insulation in Fairview need a permit?
Fairview Town Hall can say whether Union County Development Services, the town itself or another office handles permits in Fairview; ask before work starts.
