About Midland and Its Homes

The Local Climate

Midland's center sits about 500 feet above sea level, 17 miles from NOAA's Monroe 2 SE station, the best match for Midland. The station's 1991 to 2020 normals average about 3,200 heating and 1,740 cooling degree days a year, so at Midland's station, heating needs outweigh cooling.

Midland Insulation FAQs

Besides the old gold mine farm, is anything here on the National Register?

No. The Robert Harvey Morrison Farm and Pioneer Mills Gold Mine, listed in 1990, is the one entry inside town. It holds a Greek Revival farmhouse from about 1846 and the remains of a mine worked from about 1832 to 1860. Two other listings carry a Midland address but sit outside the town limits. Listing places no restriction on private owners, and the state's 2023 list shows no local historic commission for the town.

There are dark streaks in the insulation of my Midland attic. What does that mean?

Air has been moving through it. Darkened insulation works like a furnace filter, the ENERGY STAR sealing guide says: house air rises through a hidden gap and leaves its dust behind in the fibers. This page's Census numbers put most Midland houses in 1970 or later. In a house that new, common culprits are a light fixture, a wire hole or the attic hatch. The gap is sealed, and the same insulation can go back in place.

Does attic insulation in Midland need a permit?

Midland Town Hall can say whether Cabarrus County Property, Building and Development, the town itself or another office handles permits in Midland; ask before work starts.
