Attic insulation in RuthSpindale was laid out in 1916 around a new group of cotton mills, took its name from that valley of mills, and was incorporated in 1923. Its first mill village followed a plan by the landscape architect Earle Sumner Draper, though little of that plan survives.
Spindale, in Rutherford County, grew from 4,091 people in 2020 to 4,180 in 2025 (Census Bureau estimates), on 5.41 square miles. That makes Spindale the second-largest town in Rutherford County.
Spindale has about 2,100 housing units, 6 percent of Rutherford County's; about 44 percent of the town's households own their home.

Most of the town's first mill village is gone. When a Forest City mill village was nominated to the National Register in 2007, the survey found only a few early twentieth-century dwellings left here, northeast of the railroad. If yours is one of them, look hard at the old insulation before anything else. ENERGY STAR treats gray or black streaking in fiberglass as a trail left by house air seeping up from a leak below. The leak gets sealed. The streaked batts or loose fill can usually remain.
About 55 percent of Spindale's homes predate 1970; if your joists show above the insulation, ENERGY STAR says to add more insulation.
Built from 1940 to 1969, about 40 percent of Spindale homes often have little insulation.
Spindale's center sits about 1,090 feet above sea level, 5 miles from NOAA's Forest City 8 W station, the best match for Spindale. The station's 1991 to 2020 normals average about 3,650 heating and 1,390 cooling degree days a year, so at Spindale's station, heating needs outweigh cooling.
Spindale sits about 250 feet above the station, so expect slightly colder winters.
About 73 percent of Spindale housing units are detached single-family houses.
Built from 1970 to 1989, about 25 percent of Spindale homes may hold settled fiberglass; check its depth against the joists.
About 75 percent of Spindale's housing units predate 1980; nearly all predate the state's 1978 insulation rule too. Renters hold about 56 percent of Spindale's occupied homes, so many attic decisions rest with landlords.
In Spindale, about 77 percent of homes heat with electricity; where that heat is forced air, ducts often run through the attic.
Air sealing comes first, as the EPA advises: wire and pipe holes, wall tops and soffits.
Duke Energy serves most of Spindale, Broad River Electric Cooperative its edges; your bill says which. For gas, Spindale is in the Rutherford County franchise of Enbridge Gas North Carolina, and about 15 percent of the town's homes heat with piped gas. Duke's free House Call fits many Spindale homes: about 77 percent heat with electricity.

Attic insulation in EllenboroNo, going by the state preservation office. Its Rutherford County rows of National Register listings show no property inside this town. The consolidated high school that carries its name was built on a hilltop between here and the county seat and is listed under Rutherfordton. The 2023 statewide roster of local preservation commissions gives Rutherford County two, Forest City's and Rutherfordton's. So no historic designation bears on attic work here.
The low roof squeezes it there. Going by the Census estimates printed on this page, roughly half of the mill town's homes were standing before 1970. A National Register study of Raleigh's postwar houses defines the simplest ranch as a rectangle with a shallow roof pitch. Near the eaves that roof deck drops close to the ceiling, and ENERGY STAR notes that the edges sometimes get far less insulation than the middle. Rafter baffles hold a channel open to the soffit vents while the edges are filled.
It could: about 45 percent of Spindale's homes predate 1960. If a Spindale attic holds a pebble-like gray-brown or silver-gold fill, leave it undisturbed: the EPA says vermiculite may contain asbestos.
