Attic insulation in Forest CityBostic grew up around a railroad depot, got its post office in 1887 when the line arrived, and at incorporation in 1893 drew its limits as a circle half a mile out from the depot. A brickyard that opened in 1919 made brick for buildings here and in Forest City.
Bostic, in Rutherford County, grew from 354 people in 2020 to 359 in 2025 (Census Bureau estimates), on 0.93 square miles.

The Bostic Charge Parsonage, built in 1922 near Main Street and listed on the National Register in 2012, is a Craftsman bungalow of a story and a half, faced with local brick. Its nomination notes that few houses survive from before 1893 and describes plain early twentieth-century frame houses along Main Street, some L-shaped or T-shaped in plan. Inside the parsonage, a kitchen chimney hangs from the ceiling on heavy metal straps and ends in the attic below the roof, which it once passed through. A cut-off chimney like that is easy to miss from the yard. Where it pierces the ceiling, the gap still takes a snug band of aluminum flashing set in heat-rated caulk, and a dam of sheet metal keeps loose fill off the brick.
About 40 percent of Bostic's homes predate 1970; if your joists show above the insulation, ENERGY STAR says to add more insulation.
Built from 1970 to 1989, about 25 percent of Bostic homes may hold settled fiberglass; check its depth against the joists.
Bostic's center sits about 920 feet above sea level, 9 miles from NOAA's Forest City 8 W station, the best match for Bostic. The station's 1991 to 2020 normals average about 3,650 heating and 1,390 cooling degree days a year, so at Bostic's station, heating needs outweigh cooling.
Some 75 percent of Bostic housing units are detached single-family houses. With about 185 housing units in Bostic, read the figures as rough proportions.
Built from 1940 to 1969, about 25 percent of Bostic homes often have little insulation.
About 60 percent of Bostic's housing units predate 1980; nearly all predate the state's 1978 insulation rule too.
In Bostic, about 83 percent of homes heat with electricity; where that heat is forced air, ducts often run through the attic.
Air sealing comes first, as the EPA advises: wire and pipe holes, wall tops and soffits.
Bostic, an ElectriCities public power town, runs its own electric system. For gas, Bostic is in the Rutherford County franchise of Enbridge Gas North Carolina, whose mains may not reach every street in Bostic. Bottled or tank gas, bought by the delivery, heats about 11 percent of homes in Bostic.
Program to ask about in Bostic: ElectriCities energy audits (the town's electric system), home energy audits for member-town customers; ask the town's utility office. Before a job in Bostic, check its current terms; the Rutherford County page lists every program.
In a Bostic attic, only wet, moldy or animal-soiled insulation is vacuumed out (ENERGY STAR's test), once the cause is fixed, and after mice that Bostic attic is sanitized and deodorized; dry, clean insulation stays.

Attic insulation in RutherfordtonNo. A National Register listing applies to the property listed, and even there the state preservation office finds no restriction on an owner spending private money. The state list shows two more entries under this name, a house and an addition to the Washburn district, but both sit in the Bostic vicinity, outside the town. Rutherford County's only local preservation commissions on the 2023 state roster belong to Forest City and Rutherfordton.
The leftover pockets and the fans. The parsonage's nomination records a bathroom fitted into former attic space upstairs, and a downstairs bath whose ceiling was lowered so its exhaust fan could be ducted outdoors. That is the right way round: ENERGY STAR lists kitchen, bath and dryer vents that empty into an attic among the things to fix before insulating. The low side spaces behind any upstairs wall leak air too, so those get sealed and filled along with the main attic.
It could: about 35 percent of Bostic's homes predate 1960. If a Bostic attic holds a pebble-like gray-brown or silver-gold fill, leave it undisturbed: the EPA says vermiculite may contain asbestos.
Bostic Town Hall can say whether Rutherford County Building Inspections, the town itself or another office handles permits in Bostic; ask before work starts.
