Attic insulation in StaleySiler City began as Matthews Cross Roads, where two plank roads met, and took off after the Cape Fear and Yadkin Valley Railway put a depot here in 1884. For the older streets east of downtown, a 1999 nomination records Queen Anne and Gothic Revival houses, Sears kit bungalows and later ranch houses.
Siler City, in Chatham County, grew from 7,761 people in 2020 to 8,155 in 2025 (Census Bureau estimates), on 6.05 square miles. No town in Chatham County has more people than Siler City.
Siler City has about 3,300 housing units, 9 percent of Chatham County's; about 56 percent of the town's households own their home.

When Siler City was incorporated in 1887, the land east and northeast of downtown was still mostly farmland. From the 1890s on, doctors, lawyers and merchants built there. The nominations for the East Raleigh Street and North Third Avenue districts describe their two-story frame houses. Triple-A, Queen Anne and Colonial Revival designs run from about 1890 to the First World War. If a frame house of that age was balloon framed, its wall cavities can rise straight into the attic with no top plate to stop warm air. Each open stud bay is closed off from above, and only then is insulation added.
The 1999 nomination for the East Raleigh Street district identifies several Sears, Roebuck and Company houses on East Second Street, dating from about 1915 to 1920. They were precut kits, shipped by rail and put together on the lot. Its inventory describes each as a story-and-a-half bungalow with a side-gable roof and a dormer. In a house shaped like that, the upstairs rooms are tucked into the roof, and short knee walls hide wedge-shaped side attics. ENERGY STAR lists the open framing under and behind knee walls with the leaks worth plugging first. So the work covers those narrow side spaces, not just the attic above the upstairs ceiling.
About 45 percent of Siler City's homes predate 1970; if your joists show above the insulation, ENERGY STAR says to add more insulation.
From 1990 to 2009, about 40 percent of Siler City homes were built to codes below ENERGY STAR's target; check their eaves, where ENERGY STAR says insulation is often thinnest.
Siler City's center sits about 610 feet above sea level, 3 miles from NOAA's Siler City 2 N station, the best match for Siler City. The station's 1991 to 2020 normals average about 3,500 heating and 1,500 cooling degree days a year, so at Siler City's station, heating needs outweigh cooling.
About 55 percent of Siler City housing units are detached single-family houses, about 20 percent mobile homes.
Built from 1940 to 1969, about 35 percent of Siler City homes often have little insulation.
About 50 percent of Siler City's housing units predate 1980; nearly all predate the state's 1978 insulation rule too.
In Siler City, about 68 percent of homes heat with electricity; where that heat is forced air, ducts often run through the attic.
Air sealing comes first, as the EPA advises: wire and pipe holes, wall tops and soffits.
Duke Energy supplies Siler City's electricity. For gas, Siler City is in the Chatham County franchise of Enbridge Gas North Carolina, and about 27 percent of the town's homes heat with piped gas. Duke's free House Call fits many Siler City homes: about 68 percent heat with electricity.

In a Siler City attic, only wet, moldy or animal-soiled insulation is vacuumed out (ENERGY STAR's test), once the cause is fixed, and after mice that Siler City attic is sanitized and deodorized; dry, clean insulation stays.

Attic insulation in FranklinvilleNot by itself. The town has three listed districts, East Raleigh Street, North Third Avenue and the downtown commercial district, plus several buildings listed one by one. In the words of the State Historic Preservation Office, being on the Register sets no limits for an owner who uses private funds. The state's roster of local preservation commissions, dated 2023, has no Chatham County entry. Air sealing and insulating the attic are indoor jobs in any case.
It should never touch them. The district nominations record interior brick chimneys in several of the older houses, one house of 1916 having three. Where a chimney rises through the attic floor, ENERGY STAR says to bridge the opening with light aluminum and seal its edges with a high-heat caulk. A sheet-metal dam then holds the insulation back, keeping the 2 inch gap that codes commonly set for masonry.
It could: about 35 percent of Siler City's homes predate 1960. If a Siler City attic holds a pebble-like gray-brown or silver-gold fill, leave it undisturbed: the EPA says vermiculite may contain asbestos.
