Ramseur Homes and Their Attics

Housing Built by the Columbia Mill

The Columbia Manufacturing Company's work force grew from 50 in 1878 to 200 in the 1920s, and the company built and owned much of the housing in town, its 1978 nomination says. One family ran the mill from 1879 until it shut in 1963, and the state's list now marks the mill itself as gone. Since the company era, each old company house has had its own owners, so each attic has its own history. Look at the old insulation as well as its depth. Dark, dirty patches in it are tracks left by house air seeping up through gaps in the ceiling. Once those gaps are sealed, the stained insulation can usually stay.

Attic Insulation in Ramseur

Some 41 percent of Ramseur's homes predate 1970; if your joists show above the insulation, ENERGY STAR says to add more insulation.

The Local Climate

Ramseur's center sits about 480 feet above sea level, 11 miles from NOAA's Siler City 2 N station, the best match for Ramseur. The station's 1991 to 2020 normals average about 3,500 heating and 1,500 cooling degree days a year, so at Ramseur's station, heating needs outweigh cooling.

Homes by Age: What It Means for the Attic

Ramseur Insulation FAQs

Why is there so little insulation near the edges of my Ramseur ranch's attic?

Because the roof leaves no room there. By the Census table on this page, the houses put up in town from 1970 onward outnumber the older ones. A National Register study of Raleigh's postwar homes pictures the simplest ranch as one long box with a gently sloped roof. In such a house the attic narrows to inches over the outside walls. ENERGY STAR warns that the middle can be well filled while the strip along the eaves has very little. We fill that edge evenly and fit baffles, so the soffit vents keep pulling in air.

Is anything in Ramseur on the National Register of Historic Places?

Only the old mill, and the state now lists it as gone. The Deep River and Columbia Manufacturing Company mill was listed in 1978. No district of houses here has ever been listed. On the state's 2023 commission list, the only board for this area is Randolph County's landmark commission. So no historic approval stands between an ordinary house in town and attic work, which is inside work in any case.

Could the old insulation in a Ramseur attic be vermiculite?

It could: about 34 percent of Ramseur's homes predate 1960. If a Ramseur attic holds a pebble-like gray-brown or silver-gold fill, leave it undisturbed: the EPA says vermiculite may contain asbestos.

Does attic insulation in Ramseur need a permit?

Ramseur Town Hall can say whether Randolph County Building Inspections, the town itself or another office handles permits in Ramseur; ask before work starts.
