Attic Insulation in Stokesdale

From 1990 to 2009, about 55 percent of Stokesdale homes were built to codes below ENERGY STAR's target; check their eaves, where ENERGY STAR says insulation is often thinnest.
The Local Climate
Stokesdale's center sits about 950 feet above sea level, 10 miles from NOAA's Greensboro PTI Airport station, the best match for Stokesdale. The station's 1991 to 2020 normals average about 3,500 heating and 1,550 cooling degree days a year, so at Stokesdale's station, heating needs outweigh cooling.

Stokesdale Insulation FAQs
Is anything in Stokesdale listed on the National Register?
Not in this town. The state's National Register list does include a Stokesdale Historic District, but that is a neighborhood in Durham with the same name. Guilford County's entry in the state's 2023 commission roll names Greensboro, High Point and Oak Ridge, but not Stokesdale. So no district design rules touch attic work here. Whether a single house is a designated county landmark is a question for the county's joint commission.
Why does the room over our garage in Stokesdale run hotter than the rest of the house?
Because attic and garage wrap around most of it. A room over a garage can have short knee walls with attic space behind them, a ceiling that follows the roof, and a floor above space that is not heated or cooled. ENERGY STAR names the open areas behind and under knee walls among the leakiest spots in a house. Building America advises air sealing the floor over a garage and keeping its insulation tight to the subfloor. We look at all three surfaces, and insulating the garage ceiling is work we also do.
Can blown insulation cover the recessed lights in a newer Stokesdale ceiling?
Only fixtures marked for insulation contact. ENERGY STAR says insulation against an ordinary recessed can light can start a fire, and it calls for a sheet-metal or wire-mesh barrier around those. A fixture with the IC designation needs no barrier. Each can is also a hole into the attic, and ENERGY STAR lists recessed lights among the common air leaks. So we find every fixture from above, read its rating, and handle the leak and the clearance before anything is blown in.
Does attic insulation in Stokesdale need a permit?
Stokesdale Town Hall can say whether Guilford County Inspections, the town itself or another office handles permits in Stokesdale; ask before work starts.
