About Wendell and Its Homes
Wendell was incorporated in 1903 and became a tobacco market town once the railroad came through in 1906 and the Wendell Leaf Market, the county's first, opened in 1907. Its 2009 district nomination describes the houses that warehousemen and brokers built, though most homes in Wendell are newer than 1970.
Wendell, in Wake County, grew from 9,997 people in 2020 to 19,687 in 2025 (Census Bureau estimates), on 8.75 square miles.

Wendell Homes and Their Attics
The Tobacconists' Houses on Wendell Boulevard
The Wendell Boulevard Historic District, listed in 2009, was the chosen neighborhood of the town's tobacconists. That was the local word for anyone who made a living from the crop: warehouse owners, brokers, auctioneers and bankers. Its 59 main buildings date from about 1890 to 1958, and building there nearly stopped in the early 1930s. None of them had to meet a state insulation standard when new, and the nomination is silent on what their builders put overhead. Look for gray, dirty patches in that old insulation. ENERGY STAR reads them as signs of house air filtering up through a gap below, which we seal. The insulation around it can usually stay.
Dormers, a Cape Cod and an Aeroplane Bungalow
Several houses in the district are a story and a half, with rooms tucked under the roof. The nomination describes a gambrel-roofed house with twin front dormers and a Colonial Revival house with three inset dormers. There is also a hipped house with a dormer on every side, and the district's only true Cape Cod. One house, the county's only aeroplane bungalow, perches a small two-bedroom second story above a spreading ground floor. Each upstairs room of this kind has low side walls, and behind them sits a narrow triangle of attic. A building guide from Iowa's health department singles out that triangle as a frequent leak. We seal and insulate it, plus the open floor bays beneath those low walls, not only the attic overhead.
Attic Insulation in Wendell
About 15 percent of Wendell's homes predate 1970; if your joists show above the insulation, ENERGY STAR says to add more insulation.
In 2010 or later, about 50 percent of Wendell homes went up; check their air sealing as well as the depth.
The Local Climate
Wendell's center sits about 320 feet above sea level, 11 miles from NOAA's Clayton Water Plant station, the best match for Wendell. The station's 1991 to 2020 normals average about 3,390 heating and 1,580 cooling degree days a year, so at Wendell's station, heating needs outweigh cooling.
Homes by Age: What It Means for the Attic
Some 85 percent of Wendell housing units are detached single-family houses.
From 1990 to 2009, about 20 percent of Wendell homes were built to codes below ENERGY STAR's target; check their eaves, where ENERGY STAR says insulation is often thinnest.
About 25 percent of Wendell's housing units predate 1980; nearly all predate the state's 1978 insulation rule too.

Wendell Insulation FAQs
Does living in a Wendell historic district change what attic work I can do?
No, the listing itself does not. Both Wendell Boulevard and the downtown commercial blocks made the National Register, in 2009 and 1998. That is an honor roll, not a rulebook: the State Historic Preservation Office is clear that it leaves a homeowner free to repair and change a house paid for with their own money. Wendell has no local commission on the state's 2023 list. Blown insulation and air sealing happen inside anyway. Only a local landmark designation would add a certificate of appropriateness, and only for exterior work like new roof vents.
Can you insulate the old garage behind our house on Wendell Boulevard?
Yes. We insulate garages as well as attics. The district's nomination finds that roughly 35 of its main buildings have outbuildings behind them, mostly frame garages or sheds with gable roofs. It dates several of those garages from the 1910s to the 1940s. A garage that old gets a look before anything goes in: how it is framed, what shape the roof is in, and whether it has wiring. How you use it matters too.
Does attic insulation in Wendell need a permit?
Wendell Town Hall can say whether Wake County Permits and Inspections, the town itself or another office handles permits in Wendell; ask before work starts.
