About Knightdale and Its Homes
Knightdale grew from land that Henry Knight's widow gave the Raleigh and Pamlico Sound Railroad in 1905 for a depot and a town, and it was incorporated in 1927. Its railroad-era houses and 1950s ranch streets are a small part of it now, as the great majority of houses in town went up in 1970 or after.
Knightdale, in Wake County, grew from 19,501 people in 2020 to 23,144 in 2025 (Census Bureau estimates), on 9.26 square miles.
Knightdale has about 8,000 housing units, 2 percent of Wake County's; about 65 percent of the town's households own their home.

Knightdale Homes and Their Attics
Railroad Houses Near the Old Depot
The town's history page says many of Knightdale's older homes were built for railroad workers and their families, and that the stationmaster's house still stands beside the tracks on Railroad Street. The depot opened in 1907 on land Knight's widow gave the railroad, the Knight Farm nomination records. A house wired in Knightdale's railroad years may have knob-and-tube runs, and ENERGY STAR calls those a fire hazard wherever insulation buries them. Before any work in a house this old, an electrician confirms which runs are still live, and those are never buried.
Green Pines and the Postwar Ranch Streets
Knightdale missed Raleigh's immediate postwar boom and grew steadily instead, adding subdivisions in the 1950s and 1960s, the 2016 county survey update found. Oakwood Acres, platted in 1957, lies closest to downtown. Green Pines, southwest of downtown along Knightdale Boulevard, was platted in sections from 1959 to 1970, and most of its houses are ranches, with several split-levels and Modernist designs among them. A ranch roof is low-pitched, so the attic gets very shallow toward the outside walls. In ENERGY STAR's experience the center of such an attic can be deep enough while the edges hold very little. We measure out at those edges, and baffles hold the soffit vents open above the new insulation.
Subdivisions Opened by the Mingo Creek Sewer
In the late 1980s the town built the Mingo Creek sewer outfall to Raleigh with federal, state and landowner money. Its history credits that line with opening the land south of Highway 64 to subdivisions such as Parkside, Planter's Walk and Mingo Creek. If your house from those years has a bonus room over the garage, that room has the garage under it and attic space beside it. Building America's guidance for a room like that starts below it: the garage ceiling gets sealed, with the floor insulation touching the subfloor all the way across. ENERGY STAR counts the open floor bays under a room's short side walls among the big attic leaks. Garage insulation is also one of our services.
Attic Insulation in Knightdale
If the joists show above the insulation in a Knightdale attic, ENERGY STAR says to add more insulation.
In 2010 or later, 45 percent of Knightdale homes went up; check their air sealing as well as the depth.
The Local Climate
Knightdale's center sits about 320 feet above sea level, 10 miles from NOAA's Clayton Water Plant station, the best match for Knightdale. The station's 1991 to 2020 normals average about 3,390 heating and 1,580 cooling degree days a year, so at Knightdale's station, heating needs outweigh cooling.
Homes by Age: What It Means for the Attic
Some 64 percent of Knightdale housing units are detached single-family houses.
From 1990 to 2009, 41 percent of Knightdale homes were built to codes below ENERGY STAR's target; check their eaves, where ENERGY STAR says insulation is often thinnest.

Knightdale Insulation FAQs
Is my Knightdale house listed as historic, or in a historic district?
Very likely not. The state's National Register list has just two Knightdale entries, the Henry H. and Bettie S. Knight Farm and the Midway Plantation house, which was moved to its present site in 2005, and no historic district in town. Nor does the state list of local preservation commissions, as of 2023, include one for Knightdale. And National Register status alone never stops an owner from working on a house with their own money, the state preservation office says.
Our newer Knightdale house has dozens of recessed lights. Can insulation cover them?
Only the cans marked IC, for insulation contact. A can lacking the rating needs a 3-inch clear space around it, ENERGY STAR says, and we build a barrier to hold that gap. Recessed lights are on ENERGY STAR's list of attic leaks, so each is sealed from above first. Much of Knightdale went up after its growth took off in the 1980s, the county survey notes, so up in the attic we check the rating stamped on every fixture.
Does attic insulation in Knightdale need a permit?
Knightdale Town Hall can say whether Wake County Permits and Inspections, the town itself or another office handles permits in Knightdale; ask before work starts.
