Attic insulation in Holden BeachShallotte grew at the head of sloop navigation on its river, where a bridge crossed as early as 1807, kept a post office from 1837 and was incorporated in 1899. The 2010 county survey found only a few houses left in town from those early years.
Shallotte, in Brunswick County, grew from 4,167 people in 2020 to 5,335 in 2025 (Census Bureau estimates), on 9.24 square miles.
Shallotte has about 2,400 housing units, 2 percent of Brunswick County's; about 64 percent of the town's households own their home.

In 1890 a Southport paper put about a hundred people within a mile of the Shallotte bridge, along with stores, saw and grist mills, turpentine stills and a cotton gin. Of the town's houses from its early years, the survey found one plausibly dated 1892 and another from before the Civil War. It blames hurricanes and the humid climate for the loss of early wood buildings across the county. If an old house here has a brick chimney rising through the ceiling, we seal the opening beside it with sheet aluminum and high-temperature caulk. Then a metal dam goes around the masonry so no insulation touches it.
Craftsman bungalows came late to Brunswick County, the 2010 survey found, and a well-kept example in downtown Shallotte went up in 1940 for one of the town's main merchants. At mid-century the Cape Cod form of Colonial Revival grew popular in the county's rural areas. In a Cape Cod with rooms upstairs, those rooms are tucked under the roof slope, walled off from narrow side attics by short knee walls. A building-problems manual from Iowa's health department flags the triangle of space behind such a wall as a common leak. We seal and insulate those side attics as well as the space overhead.
If the joists show above the insulation in a Shallotte attic, ENERGY STAR says to add more insulation.
From 1990 to 2009, about 50 percent of Shallotte homes were built to codes below ENERGY STAR's target; check their eaves, where ENERGY STAR says insulation is often thinnest.
Shallotte's center sits about 20 feet above sea level, 3 miles from NOAA's Shallotte Ag station, the best match for Shallotte. The station's 1991 to 2020 normals average about 2,430 heating and 1,860 cooling degree days a year, so Shallotte attics work in both seasons.
The state energy code marks Brunswick County warm and humid.
About 64 percent of Shallotte housing units are detached single-family houses.
In 2010 or later, about 25 percent of Shallotte homes went up; check their air sealing as well as the depth.
About 25 percent of Shallotte units sit in buildings of two or more homes, where the attic is often shared.
In Shallotte, 93 percent of homes heat with electricity; where that heat is forced air, ducts often run through the attic.
Air sealing comes first, as the EPA advises: wire and pipe holes, wall tops and soffits.

In a Shallotte attic, only wet, moldy or animal-soiled insulation is vacuumed out (ENERGY STAR's test), once the cause is fixed, and after mice that Shallotte attic is sanitized and deodorized; dry, clean insulation stays.

Attic insulation in CalabashProbably not. Nothing in Shallotte is on the National Register. The 2010 county survey did put a few properties in town forward for the state's Study List, which only signals that a place may be eligible and promises no listing. Even a full listing, the Historic Preservation Office explains, would not limit what you do to your own house with your own funds. Brunswick County also had no local preservation commission on the 2023 state roll, so attic work here is your own call.
An electrician does, ahead of us. Houses wired before about 1930 can have knob-and-tube, and some early Shallotte houses could have it yet. ENERGY STAR calls it a fire hazard wherever it is in contact with insulation and says to have it corrected first. If any of it is still live, that part of the attic stays clear. Once the wiring is sorted out, we seal and insulate the rest.
Shallotte Town Hall can say whether Brunswick County Permits & Development, the town itself or another office handles permits in Shallotte; ask before work starts.
