Attic insulation in Ocean Isle BeachSunset Beach was incorporated in 1963, and its barrier island is linked to the mainland across the Intracoastal Waterway. Its beach took the force of Hurricane Hazel in 1954, and the Census figures here show most homes went up from 1970 on.
Sunset Beach, in Brunswick County, grew from 4,153 people in 2020 to 4,642 in 2025 (Census Bureau estimates), on 6.97 square miles.
Sunset Beach has about 5,200 housing units, 5 percent of Brunswick County's; about 86 percent of the town's households own their home. Only about 2,400 of those 5,200 units were someone's usual home in the Census Bureau's 2020 to 2024 survey; the heating and owner figures on this page describe those 2,400.

Storms and steady humidity, the county survey says, help explain why Brunswick County kept so little early wooden building. In that kind of air, the damp exhaust from a bath fan, a range hood or a clothes dryer has to leave the house entirely. ENERGY STAR lists any of those vents that empties into the attic as a condition to correct before insulating. Those get rerouted to the outdoors before any insulation goes in. The soffit vents stay uncovered too, since summer airflow through the attic is what carries its heat and moisture away.
If the joists show above the insulation in a Sunset Beach attic, ENERGY STAR says to add more insulation.
From 1990 to 2009, about 65 percent of Sunset Beach homes were built to codes below ENERGY STAR's target; check their eaves, where ENERGY STAR says insulation is often thinnest.
Sunset Beach's center sits near sea level, 8 miles from NOAA's Shallotte Ag station, the best match for Sunset Beach. The station's 1991 to 2020 normals average about 2,430 heating and 1,860 cooling degree days a year, so Sunset Beach attics work in both seasons.
The state energy code marks Brunswick County warm and humid.
Some 55 percent of Sunset Beach housing units are detached single-family houses, 10 percent mobile homes.
Built from 1970 to 1989, about 25 percent of Sunset Beach homes may hold settled fiberglass; check its depth against the joists.
About 31 percent of Sunset Beach units sit in buildings of two or more homes, where the attic is often shared.
In Sunset Beach, 92 percent of households heat with electricity; where that heat is forced air, ducts often run through the attic.
Air sealing comes first, as the EPA advises: wire and pipe holes, wall tops and soffits.

In a Sunset Beach attic, only wet, moldy or animal-soiled insulation is vacuumed out (ENERGY STAR's test), once the cause is fixed, and after mice that Sunset Beach attic is sanitized and deodorized; dry, clean insulation stays.

Attic insulation in Holden BeachLook under the roof for stains, daylight or damp insulation. Isaias came ashore at Ocean Isle Beach, the next beach town east, just after 11 at night on August 3, 2020, with winds near 85 mph. A buoy two miles off Sunset Beach logged a 76 mph gust. Lifted shingles let rain soak the layer below. ENERGY STAR treats that dampness as a roofing problem to fix before anything else, and the sodden insulation is then vacuumed out and renewed.
No register listing turns up for the town on the state's roster. The 2010 county survey did record the swing bridge and a cemetery of small brick tombs here. One tomb seems to carry an 1830s date. Being surveyed is different from being listed, though. The state's 2023 roll of preservation commissions had no Brunswick County entry, so attic work here meets no historic review.
Sunset Beach Town Hall can say whether Brunswick County Permits & Development, the town itself or another office handles permits in Sunset Beach; ask before work starts.
