The Howard-Royal House on Main Street, listed in 1986, grew in two steps. Its 1986 nomination describes a two-story front block, one room deep, added in 1892 to an older three-room house that sits behind it under a separate cross-gabled roof. A wraparound porch tied the two parts together and was later enclosed. Both parts have brick chimneys on their outer end walls, so neither chimney comes up through a ceiling. A house that has grown like this can hide more than one attic. Expect one over the front block, one over the old rear house, and perhaps a shallow space above the closed-in porch. Each one gets measured, and the new layer goes in level, without a thin strip at the edges.

Yes, if the wiring has never been replaced. The county's National Register survey suggests that the railroad station at nearby Garland sped up Salemburg's growth, and it names houses raised in or near town during the 1890s. Circuits strung before roughly 1930 may be the knob and tube type. ENERGY STAR puts that type on its fix-first list, since it becomes a fire hazard once insulation lies against it. Old circuits that still carry power stay bare.
