Roxboro Homes and Their Attics

Worker Houses in Roxboro's Four Mill Villages

Each mill built housing for its workers. The oldest village sits across Lake Drive from the 1899 cotton mill, and the county's recent architectural survey found that houses in all four villages vary little. They are one-story frame houses with gable or hip roofs, set in rows near the mill. The most common is a hip-roofed house with a porch tucked into one front corner. Some side-gabled houses have a back wing that makes a T-shaped plan, and the small hip-roofed houses later gained shed-roofed wings for bathrooms. So one mill house can hide several separate attic spaces. We open up and measure each one, then bring it to a level, unbroken layer.

Brick Ranches From the 1950s and 1960s

Roughly half the houses in Roxboro went up before 1970, by the Census count printed on this page. Ranch houses are numerous around the edges of the older neighborhoods, the county survey found, and in subdivisions platted during the 1950s and 1960s. It describes the type as wide, low and one story, usually faced in brick. A roof that low leaves almost no height above the outside walls. ENERGY STAR notes that this edge is where an attic often comes up short. Baffles go in at the eaves first. Then the soffit vents stay open while insulation is carried right out to the wall plates.

The Local Climate

Roxboro's center sits about 720 feet above sea level, 6 miles from NOAA's Roxboro 7 ESE station, the best match for Roxboro. The station's 1991 to 2020 normals average about 3,800 heating and 1,360 cooling degree days a year, so at Roxboro's station, heating needs outweigh cooling.

Roxboro Insulation FAQs

Did the mill company ever insulate my Roxboro mill village house?

The record never mentions it. The mills built and owned these houses for decades. The county survey says Ca-Vel put its village up for sale in 1951, and Roxboro Cotton Mills sold the houses in its own village and at Longhurst in the early 1960s. Since then each house has had its own owners, so what lies in each attic now varies house by house. On the day of the job, the main roof and every wing and bathroom addition get checked before anything is added.

Is my Roxboro neighborhood a listed historic district?

Not yet, if it is residential. The one National Register district in the city is the downtown commercial district, listed in 1984, plus single listings such as the courthouse and the cotton mill. In 2024 the North Roxboro, South Roxboro and Reamstown districts and the mill villages were added to the state Study List, which is short of an actual listing. The state says even a full listing leaves a private owner free to alter the house, and its 2023 list shows no preservation commission in Person County.

Could the old insulation in a Roxboro attic be vermiculite?

It could: about 30 percent of Roxboro's homes predate 1960. If a Roxboro attic holds a pebble-like gray-brown or silver-gold fill, leave it undisturbed: the EPA says vermiculite may contain asbestos.

Does attic insulation in Roxboro need a permit?

Roxboro City Hall can say whether Person County Inspections, the city itself or another office handles permits in Roxboro; ask before work starts.
