Attic insulation in Green LevelYes. The Milton Historic District, listed in 1973, was drawn along the town limits, so nearly every house here is inside it. It is a National Register district, and the State Historic Preservation Office says register listing puts no conditions on an owner using private money. No local design board appears either: the state's 2023 roster of preservation commissions skips Caswell County entirely. Attic insulation and air sealing are done from inside.
The roof, then anything venting into the attic. The district's nomination found a town of mostly nineteenth-century buildings, from the 1818 tavern to raised cottages of about 1840 to 1860, with a brick ground story under a frame upper floor. Damp or stained insulation is the first thing to look for, since ENERGY STAR reads it as a roof leak to repair before anything is added. So is any bath fan, range hood or dryer line that stops in the attic rather than outdoors. Each gets a duct run to the outside.
It could: about 70 percent of Milton's homes predate 1960. If a Milton attic holds a pebble-like gray-brown or silver-gold fill, leave it undisturbed: the EPA says vermiculite may contain asbestos.
