About Ronda and Its Homes

Ronda, on the Yadkin River in eastern Wilkes County, was incorporated in 1907 on what had been Colonel Benjamin Cleveland's estate, Roundabout, named for a sharp bend in the river. The town's name is a clipped form of Roundabout, and we found no study of the houses in town.

Ronda, in Wilkes County, grew from 441 people in 2020 to 447 in 2025 (Census Bureau estimates), on 1.08 square miles.

Ronda has about 175 housing units, 1 percent of Wilkes County's.

If the joists show above the insulation in a Ronda attic, ENERGY STAR says to add more insulation.

The Local Climate

Ronda's center sits about 960 feet above sea level, 5 miles from NOAA's Elkin station, the best match for Ronda. The station's 1991 to 2020 normals average about 4,360 heating and 1,090 cooling degree days a year, so at Ronda's station, heating needs outweigh cooling.

Readings change over short distances around Ronda: NOAA's North Wilkesboro station, 12 miles away, averages about 4,000 heating degree days. NOAA estimated part of the Elkin station's normals from nearby stations, so treat them as approximate.

Homes by Age: What It Means for the Attic

With about 175 housing units in Ronda, read the figures as rough proportions.

Built from 1940 to 1969, about 25 percent of Ronda homes often have little insulation. From 1990 to 2009, about 20 percent of Ronda homes were built to codes below ENERGY STAR's target; check their eaves, where ENERGY STAR says insulation is often thinnest.

About 50 percent of Ronda's housing units predate 1980; nearly all predate the state's 1978 insulation rule too.

Ronda Insulation FAQs

Is any Ronda building listed as a historic place?

Not within the town limits. The one listing near town is Claymont Hill, a farmhouse on the south side of the Yadkin facing the village across the river. Its 1985 nomination says it was built in 1870 around an older log house. Wilkes County's one preservation commission on the 2023 state roster serves Wilkesboro, not Ronda. So no historic rules apply to your attic.

The attic insulation in my old Ronda house looks gray in patches. Why?

Those patches mark leaks. Warm air rising from the rooms below carries dust, and the insulation strains it out like a furnace filter, ENERGY STAR says. The gray spots point to gaps at wiring holes, light fixtures, flues and wall tops. We seal those gaps first. The darkened insulation can normally stay where it is.

Could the old insulation in a Ronda attic be vermiculite?

It could: about 30 percent of Ronda's homes predate 1960. If a Ronda attic holds a pebble-like gray-brown or silver-gold fill, leave it undisturbed: the EPA says vermiculite may contain asbestos.

Does attic insulation in Ronda need a permit?

Ronda Town Hall can say whether Wilkes County Permit Information, the town itself or another office handles permits in Ronda; ask before work starts.
