By 1899, two years in, twenty new cottages had gone up, and by 1919 private owners were building so many that the Presbyterian Church launched a campaign to enlarge the grounds. The village filled each summer, when conference visitors stayed in their own cottages or boarded with the people living there all year. Some did stay on: a 1921 notice has two sisters moving into a cottage for the winter. A cottage first used in summer may have been made ready for winter later, or never insulated at all. So tell us what you know about it when you call. On install day the crew checks what lies on the attic floor, if anything, and whether old wiring or a damp roof needs dealing with first.

Built before 1940, about 35 percent of Montreat homes can hide knob-and-tube wiring and vermiculite, jobs for an electrician and an asbestos contractor first.

Readings change over short distances around Montreat: NOAA's Celo 2 S station, 14 miles away, averages about 5,050 heating degree days. NOAA estimated part of the North Fork 2 station's normals from nearby stations, so treat them as approximate.

Attic insulation in Lake LurePossibly, and it is worth a look. The town reports that the September 2024 storm dropped more than 180 trees on its rights-of-way and countless more on private land. The hurricane center counted hundreds of trees down on homes across the county. Matted or stained insulation under the roof boards means water got in. ENERGY STAR puts fixing the roof leak ahead of anything else. With the roof sound again, a vacuum hose clears the ruined material, and the attic floor gets a fresh, dry layer.
Not on the state's National Register list, which shows no listing in Montreat. The state preservation office's 2023 roster of commissions does not name one for Montreat either. So no historic review applies to insulating or sealing the attic. If the work turns up a need for new vents in the roof, ask the town about it before anything changes outside.
It could: about 50 percent of Montreat's homes predate 1960. If a Montreat attic holds a pebble-like gray-brown or silver-gold fill, leave it undisturbed: the EPA says vermiculite may contain asbestos.
