About Weaverville and Its Homes
Weaverville grew up on the Dry Ridge north of Asheville after 1850 and was incorporated in 1875, named for Montraville Weaver, who gave the land for Weaver College. Its old Main Street houses are outnumbered by newer ones, since homes built before 1970 make up fewer than half of the total.
Weaverville, in Buncombe County, grew from 4,593 people in 2020 to 4,790 in 2025 (Census Bureau estimates), on 3.88 square miles. That makes Weaverville the fourth-largest town in Buncombe County.
Weaverville has about 2,500 housing units, 2 percent of Buncombe County's.

Weaverville Homes and Their Attics
Early Twentieth Century Houses on North Main
The Methodist church on North Main Street went up in 1919 and 1920, after lightning burned its frame predecessor in 1917. Its National Register nomination, listed in 1996, describes both sides of North Main north of the church as lined with houses built mostly in the early twentieth century. In a house of that age, the first wiring may be knob-and-tube, the system in use until about 1930. ENERGY STAR counts it as a fire risk once insulation is packed around it. An electrician deals with it first, and no insulation goes over a run that is still in use.

The Local Climate
Weaverville's center sits about 2,180 feet above sea level, 7 miles from NOAA's Asheville station, the best match for Weaverville. The station's 1991 to 2020 normals average about 3,880 heating and 1,090 cooling degree days a year, so at Weaverville's station, heating needs outweigh cooling.
Readings change over short distances around Weaverville: NOAA's Bent Creek station, 14 miles away, averages about 4,590 heating degree days.

Weaverville Insulation FAQs
Is Main Street in Weaverville a historic district with rules for attic work?
No, not on the state's lists. Weaverville's National Register entries are single buildings, such as the Methodist church on North Main Street, not a district. The state preservation office's 2023 list of commissions shows only the Asheville and Buncombe County commission and Black Mountain's in this county, none for Weaverville. So no historic review stands between you and an attic job. An older house still gets the wiring and chimney checks before insulation goes in.
We have recessed lights in our newer Weaverville house. Do they matter in the attic?
Yes, and each one gets a look from above. ENERGY STAR says insulation must stay 3 inches away from a recessed can light unless the fixture is rated IC, for insulated ceiling. It also lists recessed lights among the common places where house air leaks into the attic. So we check each fixture's rating from the attic side. Only IC fixtures are made to sit in insulation. Any other can keeps its clearance, with a barrier around it.
Could the old insulation in a Weaverville attic be vermiculite?
It could: about 20 percent of Weaverville's homes predate 1960. If a Weaverville attic holds a pebble-like gray-brown or silver-gold fill, leave it undisturbed: the EPA says vermiculite may contain asbestos.
Does attic insulation in Weaverville need a permit?
Weaverville Town Hall can say whether Buncombe County Permits & Inspections, the town itself or another office handles permits in Weaverville; ask before work starts.
