Kingstown Homes and Their Attics
Ranch Houses on Former Rural Tracts
Looking at the county's building from 1945 to 1975, the 2019 architectural survey names Kingstown among the ranch house developments built on rural tracts away from the older towns. It describes the usual Cleveland County ranch as one story and long, most often under a low-pitched side-gable roof. Under a roof that shallow, the rafters sit just above the ceiling near the outer walls. ENERGY STAR notes that this edge sometimes ends up with far less than the center of the attic. We fill it out to the walls, with baffles holding a channel open above each soffit vent for outside air.

The Local Climate
Kingstown's center sits about 920 feet above sea level, 4 miles from NOAA's Shelby 2 NW station, the best match for Kingstown. The station's 1991 to 2020 normals average about 3,560 heating and 1,460 cooling degree days a year, so at Kingstown's station, heating needs outweigh cooling.

Kingstown Insulation FAQs
Is Kingstown a historic district, or is my house listed?
Neither, as the state's records stand. Nothing in Kingstown is on the National Register. The 2019 county survey sampled a Kingstown Historic Area and recommended more study of it, which is a research step and not a designation. Even a listing would put no restriction on a private owner, the State Historic Preservation Office says. Nothing in those records stands in the way of insulating and sealing your attic.
Why is the old insulation in our Kingstown attic streaked dark in places?
Those streaks show where air has been moving. ENERGY STAR explains that dirty insulation is evidence of house air leaking up through it, often at holes for wiring and plumbing, around light fixtures and at the attic hatch. The insulation itself is usually fine to keep. We pull it back at those spots, seal the gaps underneath, and lay it back before anything new goes on.
Does attic insulation in Kingstown need a permit?
Kingstown Town Hall can say whether Cleveland County Building Inspections, the town itself or another office handles permits in Kingstown; ask before work starts.
