Polkville Homes and Their Attics
The 1960s Ranch Houses on Eastwood Drive
Ranch house subdivisions sprang up around some of Cleveland County's smaller towns, the 2019 county survey says. Its example is a group of 1960s houses on Eastwood Drive in Polkville. If a dropped soffit boxes in the space over your kitchen cabinets, its top may be open to the attic, and house air can rise straight through it. ENERGY STAR advises clearing the insulation off such a soffit, covering and sealing the opening, then spreading the insulation over it again. That is done from above, before any new layer goes in.
Attic Insulation in Polkville
If the joists show above the insulation in a Polkville attic, ENERGY STAR says to add more insulation.
The Local Climate
Polkville's center sits about 1,070 feet above sea level, 8 miles from NOAA's Shelby 2 NW station, the best match for Polkville. The station's 1991 to 2020 normals average about 3,560 heating and 1,460 cooling degree days a year, so at Polkville's station, heating needs outweigh cooling.
Polkville sits about 250 feet above the station, so expect slightly colder winters. Readings change over short distances around Polkville: NOAA's Vale Ag 2 SW station, 13 miles away, averages about 3,890 heating degree days.
Homes by Age: What It Means for the Attic
With about 260 housing units in Polkville, read the figures as rough proportions.

From 1990 to 2009, about 35 percent of Polkville homes were built to codes below ENERGY STAR's target; check their eaves, where ENERGY STAR says insulation is often thinnest.

Polkville Insulation FAQs
Polkville goes back to 1791. Is my house on any historic register?
No listing says so. The National Register has no property recorded in or around Polkville. The county's 2019 survey did record the town's cotton gin from about 1940 and the Eastwood Drive houses, and it called Polkville's historic center rich enough to deserve more survey. Being recorded in a survey is not a designation, and it sets no rules for work inside your house.
The rooms upstairs in our Polkville farmhouse run hot and cold. Why?
If they sit partly inside the roof, the short knee walls are a likely reason. Behind each knee wall is a narrow wedge of attic, and a state training guide from Iowa on building problem areas notes that this wedge is often leaky. ENERGY STAR puts knee walls, both behind and below them, on its list of attic air leaks. Those side attics, and the floor framing beneath them, get sealed and insulated, not only the space overhead.
Does attic insulation in Polkville need a permit?
Polkville City Hall can say whether Cleveland County Building Inspections, the city itself or another office handles permits in Polkville; ask before work starts.
