Attic insulation in AydenWinterville grew around a cotton planter works that Amos Graves Cox moved next to the railroad in 1894, and the town was incorporated in 1897. A few historic buildings stand downtown, among them the Ange house of about 1901, but many homes here went up in the building boom of the 2000s.
Winterville, in Pitt County, grew from 10,509 people in 2020 to 10,973 in 2025 (Census Bureau estimates), on 4.93 square miles. That makes Winterville the second-largest town in Pitt County.
Winterville has about 4,700 housing units, 6 percent of Pitt County's; 83 percent of the town's households own their home.

Winterville was wired early. The nomination for the Cox-Ange House says the Cox works supplied the town with water and power. The town history adds that the company dynamo made Winterville the first town in Pitt County with electric lights. So the oldest houses near Main and Church streets may have been wired in the knob-and-tube years, before about 1930. ENERGY STAR warns that this kind of wiring becomes a fire hazard when insulation covers it. Before any insulation goes into an old house here, an electrician looks over the wiring, and any live knob-and-tube is left uncovered.
Many Winterville houses were built during the 2000 to 2010 boom, the town says in its 2019 land use plan. The Census table on this page agrees that the bulk of the housing is younger than 1970. If your ceilings have can lights set into them, find out whether each one is IC-rated, meaning made to touch insulation. A can without that rating needs open space of 3 inches all around it, per ENERGY STAR, while an IC-rated can may sit under the insulation. Each can is also an opening between room and attic. Seal around it from above when the rest of the ceiling gets sealed.
If the joists show above the insulation in a Winterville attic, ENERGY STAR says to add more insulation.
From 1990 to 2009, about 55 percent of Winterville homes were built to codes below ENERGY STAR's target; check their eaves, where ENERGY STAR says insulation is often thinnest.
Winterville's center sits about 70 feet above sea level, 8 miles from NOAA's Greenville station, the best match for Winterville. The station's 1991 to 2020 normals average about 2,940 heating and 1,920 cooling degree days a year, so at Winterville's station, heating needs outweigh cooling.
Some 85 percent of Winterville housing units are detached single-family houses.
Built from 1970 to 1989, about 20 percent of Winterville homes may hold settled fiberglass; check its depth against the joists.
About 25 percent of Winterville's housing units predate 1980; nearly all predate the state's 1978 insulation rule too.
In Winterville, about 75 percent of homes heat with electricity; where that heat is forced air, ducts often run through the attic.
Air sealing comes first, as the EPA advises: wire and pipe holes, wall tops and soffits.
Winterville, an ElectriCities public power town, runs its own electric system, and Duke Energy Progress and Greenville Utilities Commission (GUC) serve some of its homes too. For gas, Winterville is in the Pitt County franchise of Piedmont Natural Gas, and 23 percent of the town's homes heat with piped gas.
Program to ask about in Winterville: ElectriCities energy audits (the town's electric system), home energy audits for member-town customers; ask the town's utility office. Before a job in Winterville, check its current terms; the Pitt County page lists every program.
In a Winterville attic, only wet, moldy or animal-soiled insulation is vacuumed out (ENERGY STAR's test), once the cause is fixed, and after mice that Winterville attic is sanitized and deodorized; dry, clean insulation stays.

Attic insulation in FarmvilleVery likely not. The only National Register listing within the town is the Cox-Ange House, a single property listed in 2000. The Renston Rural Historic District, listed in 2003, lies beyond the town limits. When the state listed local preservation commissions in 2023, Pitt County had one, and it serves Greenville. That leaves no historic review over attic work in Winterville.
They show where air has been leaking through. Insulation works a little like a furnace filter, and ENERGY STAR notes that it darkens where house air keeps passing through it and leaves its dust behind. Streaks often show up over the tops of interior walls, around light fixtures, at wiring holes and near the attic hatch. Those openings get sealed from above. The stained insulation is usually still fine to keep, and once the leak is closed it goes back to work.
Winterville Town Hall can say whether Pitt County Permitting & Inspections, the town itself or another office handles permits in Winterville; ask before work starts.
