Attic insulation in LocustMount Pleasant was settled by Germans from Pennsylvania where the Salisbury road south met the Fayetteville to Charlotte road, and Lutherans opened an academy on its hill in 1852. Its historic district holds Greek Revival houses from 1840 on, Queen Anne homes of the mill years and ranches built into the 1970s.
Mount Pleasant, in Cabarrus County, grew from 1,673 people in 2020 to 1,816 in 2025 (Census Bureau estimates), on 3.62 square miles.
Mount Pleasant has about 880 housing units, 1 percent of Cabarrus County's; about 74 percent of the town's households own their home.

The 1986 district nomination dates the oldest house in town to 1840. It describes most of the Greek Revival homes, built up to the early 1860s, as two stories tall and one room deep. A house that old went up long before electric light, so every wire now running through its attic was added later, some of it perhaps a century ago. ENERGY STAR warns that knob-and-tube circuits, common before about 1930, become a fire risk when buried in insulation. In one of these houses, an electrician looks over the attic wiring before any insulation goes in, and live knob-and-tube is left uncovered.
When four local industries opened around the turn of the century, building picked up again. The nomination calls the two-story L-shaped house, with a wrap-around porch and ornamental vents high in the gables, the most common Queen Anne form in the district, built from 1880 to 1911. Those gable vents are part of how the attic breathes: air comes in low at the eaves and leaves through the gables or ridge. When insulation is added, the eaves stay open behind baffles and the gable openings stay clear. The two wings of an L can also have separate attic spaces, and each one is measured.
In 2024, new documentation pushed the district's period of significance forward from about 1935 to about 1976. That brought in Minimal Traditional and Ranch houses, among them a brick Colonial Revival ranch built in 1952. By the town's Census numbers higher up this page, roughly half its homes went up before 1970. A one-story ranch spreads its attic wide under a low roof. The far corners over the outside walls get little headroom. That is where a layer of insulation can come up short, so we check the edges as well as the middle.
If the joists show above the insulation in a Mount Pleasant attic, ENERGY STAR says to add more insulation.
From 1990 to 2009, about 35 percent of Mount Pleasant homes were built to codes below ENERGY STAR's target; check their eaves, where ENERGY STAR says insulation is often thinnest.
Mount Pleasant's center sits about 630 feet above sea level, 8 miles from NOAA's Concord station, the best match for Mount Pleasant. The station's 1991 to 2020 normals average about 3,290 heating and 1,760 cooling degree days a year, so at Mount Pleasant's station, heating needs outweigh cooling.
About 82 percent of Mount Pleasant housing units are detached single-family houses.
Built before 1940, about 20 percent of Mount Pleasant homes can hide knob-and-tube wiring and vermiculite, jobs for an electrician and an asbestos contractor first.
In Mount Pleasant, about 93 percent of homes heat with electricity; where that heat is forced air, ducts often run through the attic.
Air sealing comes first, as the EPA advises: wire and pipe holes, wall tops and soffits.

Attic insulation in RockwellNo approval is needed for that. The district is on the National Register. An owner paying privately for work on a house there is not bound by that listing, the State Historic Preservation Office makes clear. The state's 2023 list of local historic commissions shows only Concord's in Cabarrus County, not one for Mount Pleasant. Insulation and air sealing are indoor work. If a new roof or gable vent is ever planned, ask the town first anyway.
Probably not. The Kindley Cotton Mill opened in 1896 and 1897, and its village went up with it. In 1986, nine of its thirteen houses were standing, one and two stories with rear shed rooms and ells. The 2024 update records that this mill housing was torn down between 1987 and 1995 and that the land is still vacant. One two-story house beside the mill, likely built with it, is still listed. Unless yours is that house, it was not built by the mill, and its attic is judged on its own build.
It could: about 30 percent of Mount Pleasant's homes predate 1960. If a Mount Pleasant attic holds a pebble-like gray-brown or silver-gold fill, leave it undisturbed: the EPA says vermiculite may contain asbestos.
