The Local Climate
McDonald's center sits about 150 feet above sea level, 8 miles from NOAA's Lumberton Municipal Airport station, the best match for McDonald. The station's 1991 to 2020 normals average about 2,610 heating and 2,090 cooling degree days a year, so McDonald attics work in both seasons.

McDonald Insulation FAQs
I found gray-brown pebbles in my McDonald attic. What are they, and what now?
They may be vermiculite, so stop and leave them be. EPA describes it as a pebble-like pour-in fill, usually gray-brown or silver-gold, and says to treat it as if it holds asbestos. Keep it undisturbed, store nothing up there, and bring in an asbestos contractor if it must come out. We do not remove or cover it. A mine at Libby, Montana, supplied most of it from 1919 to 1990, years that span most of this town's life from its 1911 charter on.
Is any McDonald property on the National Register, or under local preservation rules?
Neither, from what the state shows. The preservation office's Register roll for Robeson County has no entry in town or close by, and its 2023 directory of commission staff has no Robeson listing. Attic work here is planned around the house alone. Beyond the short Gazetteer entry, we found little in print on the town's past, so each house is judged by what its own framing and attic show.
Does attic insulation in McDonald need a permit?
McDonald Town Hall can say whether Robeson County Community Development, the town itself or another office handles permits in McDonald; ask before work starts.
