McAdenville Homes and Their Attics

Brick Row, the Mill Duplexes of the 1880s

The McAdenville Historic District nomination counts fifteen surviving brick mill houses from the 1880s, once known as Brick Row. That alone sets the village apart, since nearly all Southern mill houses were frame. Each is a two-story brick house with its gable to the street and a plan two rooms deep, most built as side-by-side duplexes. Several inventory entries note a one-story frame addition across the back under a separate hip roof. Above a house like this there are two places to check: the attic under the main gable, and a lower, tighter one over the back addition. Where an inside brick chimney pierces the ceiling, thin aluminum is bent around it and bedded in caulk made for high heat, and a sheet-metal dam leaves the masonry bare of insulation.

Attic Insulation in McAdenville

Some 22 percent of McAdenville's homes predate 1970; if your joists show above the insulation, ENERGY STAR says to add more insulation.

The Local Climate

McAdenville's center sits about 590 feet above sea level, 4 miles from NOAA's Gastonia station, the best match for McAdenville. The station's 1991 to 2020 normals average about 3,000 heating and 1,850 cooling degree days a year, so at McAdenville's station, heating needs outweigh cooling.

McAdenville Insulation FAQs

Does the McAdenville Historic District listing limit work on my house?

Not the listing by itself. The National Register took in McAdenville's mill district in 2009. A listing alone, the state preservation office says, puts nothing off limits for an owner paying privately for repairs or changes. The state's 2023 roster of local preservation boards has no McAdenville entry. The nomination notes that much of the district belongs to the mill interests, so if you rent, the owner decides on attic work. Ask the town before cutting any new vent through the roof.

Are the newer McAdenville houses south of Main Street built differently?

Yes, and they date from a different century. In 2006 the mill company and a Charlotte builder began replacing the old frame mill annex on Wesleyan Drive with neotraditional houses that have front porches and detached garages. Going by the housing figures printed on this page, the bulk of McAdenville's homes went up from 1970 on. In those newer houses, recessed ceiling lights are one thing to check: ENERGY STAR keeps insulation 3 inches from any can that is not rated for contact.

Could the old insulation in a McAdenville attic be vermiculite?

It could: about 20 percent of McAdenville's homes predate 1960. If a McAdenville attic holds a pebble-like gray-brown or silver-gold fill, leave it undisturbed: the EPA says vermiculite may contain asbestos.

Does attic insulation in McAdenville need a permit?

McAdenville Town Hall can say whether Gaston County Building Inspections, the town itself or another office handles permits in McAdenville; ask before work starts.
