Attic insulation in Black CreekLucama grew out of Lucas Crossroads once the railroad's Fayetteville Branch opened in 1886, and was incorporated in 1889. Within its historic district, frame houses of one and two stories put up between about 1890 and 1930 predominate, many of them cottages broken up by cross gables and side wings.
Lucama, in Wilson County, grew from 1,027 people in 2020 to 1,052 in 2025 (Census Bureau estimates), on 0.61 square miles. That makes Lucama the third-largest town in Wilson County.
Lucama has about 400 housing units, 1 percent of Wilson County's; about 52 percent of the town's households own their home.

The district's nomination describes Victorian cottages from 1887 to about 1905, several with multiple cross gables. One-story Colonial Revival cottages followed from about 1900 to 1915, pairing hipped roofs with lopsided wings. Under a roof like that there may not be one open attic. Each gable and wing can close off a pocket of its own, with a different depth. Every pocket gets reached and measured. ENERGY STAR's guide wants the layer even, without low spots, and in a Lucama cottage that means filling every pocket rather than only the open middle.
About 35 percent of Lucama's homes predate 1970; if your joists show above the insulation, ENERGY STAR says to add more insulation.
Lucama's center sits about 130 feet above sea level, 5 miles from NOAA's Wilson 3 SW station, the best match for Lucama. The station's 1991 to 2020 normals average about 3,060 heating and 1,840 cooling degree days a year, so at Lucama's station, heating needs outweigh cooling.
About 46 percent of Lucama housing units are detached single-family houses. With about 400 housing units in Lucama, read the figures as rough proportions.
Built before 1940, about 10 percent of Lucama homes can hide knob-and-tube wiring and vermiculite, jobs for an electrician and an asbestos contractor first. Built from 1940 to 1969, about 25 percent of Lucama homes often have little insulation.
About 70 percent of Lucama's housing units predate 1980; nearly all predate the state's 1978 insulation rule too.
Air sealing comes first, as the EPA advises: wire and pipe holes, wall tops and soffits.
Lucama, an ElectriCities public power town, runs its own electric system. For gas, Lucama is in the Wilson County franchise of Piedmont Natural Gas, whose mains may not reach every street in Lucama. Bottled or tank gas, bought by the delivery, heats about 23 percent of homes in Lucama.
Program to ask about in Lucama: ElectriCities energy audits (the town's electric system), home energy audits for member-town customers; ask the town's utility office. Before a job in Lucama, check its current terms; the Wilson County page lists every program.
In a Lucama attic, only wet, moldy or animal-soiled insulation is vacuumed out (ENERGY STAR's test), once the cause is fixed, and after mice that Lucama attic is sanitized and deodorized; dry, clean insulation stays.

Attic insulation in KenlyThat depends on the chimney's position. The district's inventory shows cottages whose chimneys stand outside a gable wall, plus at least one house with a chimney in the middle. An outside chimney never passes through the attic floor. A middle one does, and the opening around it lets warm house air climb straight up. ENERGY STAR calls for thin aluminum sheet sealed in with high-heat caulk, and a metal shield holding insulation back from the masonry, typically two inches.
Recognition rather than rules. The district, 65 parcels between Main Street, Black Creek Road and the railroad, went on the National Register in 1986. Per the state's preservation office, being listed does not limit what a private owner pays to repair or alter. No commission for Lucama appears on the office's 2023 roster, so attic insulation and air sealing call for no design review here.
Lucama Town Hall can say whether Wilson County Inspections Division, the town itself or another office handles permits in Lucama; ask before work starts.
