Attic insulation in MicroKenly began with the railroad: the Wilmington and Weldon line bought a right-of-way here in 1885 and laid its track, and the town, named for a railway official, was incorporated in 1887. No study of its older houses has been published, so the attic notes below work from the house itself, not from a survey.
Kenly, in Johnston County, grew from 1,500 people in 2020 to 1,722 in 2025 (Census Bureau estimates), on 1.88 square miles.

If the joists show above the insulation in a Kenly attic, ENERGY STAR says to add more insulation.
Kenly's center sits about 190 feet above sea level, 12 miles from NOAA's Wilson 3 SW station, the best match for Kenly. The station's 1991 to 2020 normals average about 3,060 heating and 1,840 cooling degree days a year, so at Kenly's station, heating needs outweigh cooling.
Built from 1970 to 1989, about 25 percent of Kenly homes may hold settled fiberglass; check its depth against the joists. From 1990 to 2009, about 20 percent of Kenly homes were built to codes below ENERGY STAR's target; check their eaves, where ENERGY STAR says insulation is often thinnest.
In Kenly, about 75 percent of homes heat with electricity; where that heat is forced air, ducts often run through the attic.
Air sealing comes first, as the EPA advises: wire and pipe holes, wall tops and soffits.
Duke Energy Progress supplies Kenly's electricity. For gas, Kenly is in the Johnston County franchise of Piedmont Natural Gas, whose mains may not reach every street in Kenly. Duke's free House Call fits many Kenly homes: about 75 percent heat with electricity. Bottled or tank gas, bought by the delivery, heats 14 percent of homes in Kenly.

Attic insulation in LucamaNone that we found. The state's National Register list places no property inside town. The Boyette Slave House is listed as being in the vicinity, which means beyond the limits. The two Johnston County preservation commissions on the state's 2023 roster belong to Benson and Smithfield. With no designation in play, the attic plan is set by the house and nothing else.
Probably not by any rule. Under state law, meeting insulation standards became a condition of moving in only for homes begun on January 1, 1978 or later. Roughly half the homes in town are older than 1970, the housing table on this page shows. In those, any insulation on the attic floor was a builder's or a later owner's choice, at whatever depth they picked. Before topping it up, the crew checks it at several points, including over any additions.
It could: about 30 percent of Kenly's homes predate 1960. If a Kenly attic holds a pebble-like gray-brown or silver-gold fill, leave it undisturbed: the EPA says vermiculite may contain asbestos.
Kenly Town Hall can say whether Johnston County Building Inspections Department, the town itself or another office handles permits in Kenly; ask before work starts.
