One of the town's two National Register nominations covers a doctor's cottage of the early 1880s that faced the railroad on Center Street. It singles out a chimney type rare in Wilson County but most often found in Black Creek. These are interior end chimneys with their brick faces exposed outside. Rising inside the gable walls, each one passes through the ceiling at an end of the house, and the gap beside it opens into the attic. The gap gets a sealed collar of lightweight aluminum, never foam, and a metal barrier keeps insulation clear of the brick, as ENERGY STAR advises.
About 35 percent of Black Creek's homes predate 1970; if your joists show above the insulation, ENERGY STAR says to add more insulation.
Black Creek's center sits about 130 feet above sea level, 4 miles from NOAA's Wilson 3 SW station, the best match for Black Creek. The station's 1991 to 2020 normals average about 3,060 heating and 1,840 cooling degree days a year, so at Black Creek's station, heating needs outweigh cooling.
At about 370 housing units, give or take 93, Black Creek is too small for the survey to date its houses. For Black Creek, the nearest town with solid figures is Wilson, 7 miles off: median year built 1983 and 33 percent of homes built before 1970.
In Black Creek, 74 percent of homes heat with electricity; where that heat is forced air, ducts often run through the attic.
Air sealing in a Black Creek attic covers wire and pipe holes, wall tops, the attic stair and bath fans.
Black Creek runs its own electric system. For gas, Black Creek is in the Wilson County franchise of Piedmont Natural Gas, whose mains may not reach every street in Black Creek.
No utility insulation rebate for Black Creek turned up on the pages we read; income-eligible households may qualify for Energy Saver North Carolina, so check whether it has opened in Wilson County. The Wilson County page lists every program.
In a Black Creek attic, only wet, moldy or animal-soiled insulation is vacuumed out (ENERGY STAR's test), once the cause is fixed, and after mice that Black Creek attic is sanitized and deodorized; dry, clean insulation stays.

Attic insulation in EurekaTwo in town were listed in 1986. One is a large two-story frame house finished in 1901, with slate roofs over its main block, ell and kitchen. The other, a doctor's cottage of the early 1880s, is marked gone on the state's list. The Black Creek Rural Historic District lies outside the town limits. Being listed puts no limits on a private owner's work, and the 2023 roster shows no preservation commission for Black Creek, so no historic review applies to an attic.
Wiring, then the roof. A house from the town's growth years, 1890 to 1920, may still carry knob-and-tube circuits. ENERGY STAR dates that wiring to before about 1930 and calls it a fire hazard against insulation, so an electrician looks at it before anything goes in. Wet patches in the old layer mean water is getting through the roof, and the roofing gets repaired before we start. After that, the chimney gaps and the ceiling are sealed and the new layer goes down evenly.
It could: about 25 percent of Black Creek's homes predate 1960. If a Black Creek attic holds a pebble-like gray-brown or silver-gold fill, leave it undisturbed: the EPA says vermiculite may contain asbestos.
