Attic insulation in Bessemer CityKings Mountain, incorporated in 1874 and named for the mountain seven miles south, took in East Kings Mountain in 1923. Its three historic districts run from houses of about 1870 around Central School to a village of one-story mill houses the Neisler family built in 1919 and 1920.
Kings Mountain, in Cleveland County, grew from 11,314 people in 2020 to 12,117 in 2025 (Census Bureau estimates), on 14.0 square miles. That makes Kings Mountain the second-largest town in Cleveland County.
Kings Mountain has about 4,900 housing units; 62 percent of the city's households own their home.

The Margrace Mill Village, at the city's southwest edge, holds 46 one-story frame mill houses built for workers at the Neisler family's Margrace and Patricia mills. Its most common type is a four-room house under a broad, low hip roof, with a brick chimney rising near the center. Another type began as duplexes paired under one hip roof around central chimneys. Under that kind of roof, the attic pinches down toward each outside wall, and the chimney stands near its tallest point. The gap around that chimney is closed with aluminum flashing and high-temperature caulk, and a sheet-metal dam keeps insulation off the brick.
The West End Historic District, just west of the railroad, spans houses from about 1882 to about 1955, and most of them date from 1900 to 1939. Its nomination notes a small group of turn-of-the-century one-story cottages with rear ells, most of them later remodeled or rebuilt as bungalows. A house wired in those early decades may still have knob-and-tube circuits hidden in the attic. ENERGY STAR warns that this wiring can be a fire hazard when insulation touches it. An electrician looks at it before we start, and any live run is left uncovered until it is replaced.
About 40 percent of Kings Mountain's homes predate 1970; if your joists show above the insulation, ENERGY STAR says to add more insulation.
Built from 1970 to 1989, about 30 percent of Kings Mountain homes may hold settled fiberglass; check its depth against the joists.
Kings Mountain's center sits about 1,000 feet above sea level, 15 miles from NOAA's Lincolnton 4 W station, the best match for Kings Mountain. The station's 1991 to 2020 normals average about 3,330 heating and 1,470 cooling degree days a year, so at Kings Mountain's station, heating needs outweigh cooling.
Some 73 percent of Kings Mountain housing units are detached single-family houses.
Built from 1940 to 1969, about 30 percent of Kings Mountain homes often have little insulation.
About 55 percent of Kings Mountain's housing units predate 1980; nearly all predate the state's 1978 insulation rule too.
In Kings Mountain, 56 percent of homes heat with electricity; where that heat is forced air, ducts often run through the attic.
Air sealing comes first, as the EPA advises: wire and pipe holes, wall tops and soffits.
Kings Mountain, an ElectriCities public power town, runs its own electric system. Kings Mountain's natural gas comes from the city's own municipal system, and about 40 percent of the city's homes heat with it.
Program to ask about in Kings Mountain: ElectriCities energy audits (the city's electric system), home energy audits for member-town customers; ask the city's utility office. Before a job in Kings Mountain, check its current terms; the Cleveland County page lists every program.
In a Kings Mountain attic, only wet, moldy or animal-soiled insulation is vacuumed out (ENERGY STAR's test), once the cause is fixed, and after mice that Kings Mountain attic is sanitized and deodorized; dry, clean insulation stays.

Attic insulation in WacoNot the mill's rules, and not the National Register's. The Neisler company sold the village houses, mostly to the families living in them, in the autumn of 1956. The village joined the National Register in 2009. Per the State Historic Preservation Office, that listing sets no rules for an owner doing private work with private money. Insulating your attic is your own decision. The only limits are the ones the house sets: low edges, a center chimney and, in some houses, a rear ell.
Not always the same attic. The Margrace nomination records owners on Cloninger Street enclosing their shed-roofed front porches to gain a room, since some of those houses had only one bedroom. If the porch kept its own shed roof, the ceiling of that room sits under a separate, shallow space, or under none at all. We look at it apart from the main attic. Wherever insulation goes, ENERGY STAR wants it spread evenly, without low spots.
It could: about 30 percent of Kings Mountain's homes predate 1960. If a Kings Mountain attic holds a pebble-like gray-brown or silver-gold fill, leave it undisturbed: the EPA says vermiculite may contain asbestos.
