Grover Homes and Their Attics
Ranch Houses of the Lakeside-Lakeview Neighborhood
In the Lakeside-Lakeview neighborhood, above a lake on the west side of town, the county's 2019 architectural survey found unusually refined ranch houses. Grover industrialists and other townspeople built them, members of the mill-owning family among them. One from about 1952 has an angled plan, and a similar house followed in 1968. A house that bends like that has a roof in several sections, and the attic under each one can be reached differently and hold a different depth. ENERGY STAR advises an even layer with no low spots, so we check every section, not only the one by the hatch.
Attic Insulation in Grover
About 50 percent of Grover's homes predate 1970; if your joists show above the insulation, ENERGY STAR says to add more insulation.
Built from 1940 to 1969, before the state's 1978 insulation rule, about 40 percent of Grover homes often have little insulation.
The Local Climate
Grover's center sits about 860 feet above sea level, 12 miles from NOAA's Shelby 2 NW station, the best match for Grover. The station's 1991 to 2020 normals average about 3,560 heating and 1,460 cooling degree days a year, so at Grover's station, heating needs outweigh cooling.
Readings change over short distances around Grover: NOAA's Gastonia Municipal Airport station, 17 miles away, averages about 2,870 heating degree days.

Grover Insulation FAQs
Is my Grover house listed on the National Register?
No. Nothing inside Grover is on the state's National Register list. The one entry near it, the Shiloh Presbyterian Church Cemetery, is recorded as outside the town. For local preservation, the state's 2023 roster lists a county commission and nothing for Grover alone. The preservation office adds that listing by itself puts no limits on a private owner, so the register is no hurdle for attic work.
What happens if the insulation in my Grover attic is damp or stained?
The roof comes first. ENERGY STAR reads wet or damp insulation as the mark of a leaking roof and says to have the leak fixed before any insulating. Once the roof is sound, we vacuum out the soaked insulation, seal the gaps in the ceiling below it and blow in a fresh, even layer. Fresh stains on the ceilings inside are a reason to look up there soon.
Could the old insulation in a Grover attic be vermiculite?
It could: about 40 percent of Grover's homes predate 1960. If a Grover attic holds a pebble-like gray-brown or silver-gold fill, leave it undisturbed: the EPA says vermiculite may contain asbestos.
Does attic insulation in Grover need a permit?
Grover Town Hall can say whether Cleveland County Building Inspections, the town itself or another office handles permits in Grover; ask before work starts.
