Haw River Homes and Their Attics

Company Houses Around the Granite and Cora Mills

The Holts built houses and boarding houses for the workers at their three mills here, most of them modest one-story frame dwellings. The 2020 nomination for the Granite, Cora and Holt mills places the earliest ones east of Granite Mill. It adds that the low-lying clusters called Sugar Hill and Pine Knot were torn down in the late twentieth century. A 1919 newspaper count it cites put the village at well over a hundred houses, ranging from two rooms to eight. A small one-story house leaves a low attic that gets very tight at the eaves. Baffles go in at each rafter bay first, so the new insulation can reach the outer walls without blocking the soffit vents.

Attic Insulation in Haw River

About 50 percent of Haw River's homes predate 1970; if your joists show above the insulation, ENERGY STAR says to add more insulation.

Built from 1940 to 1969, before the state's 1978 insulation rule, about 35 percent of Haw River homes often have little insulation.

The Local Climate

Haw River's center sits about 570 feet above sea level, 2 miles from NOAA's Haw River 1 E station, the best match for Haw River. The station's 1991 to 2020 normals average about 3,550 heating and 1,590 cooling degree days a year, so at Haw River's station, heating needs outweigh cooling.

Readings change over short distances around Haw River: NOAA's Burlington Fire Station 5, 5 miles away, averages about 3,290 heating degree days.

Haw River Insulation FAQs

Did the mill company ever insulate the old village houses in Haw River?

Nothing in the mills' 2020 nomination says so, and nothing obliged it to. By 1931 the mills' new owner kept only a few dozen houses there, and the rest of the village homes were owner-occupied. State insulation standards for new homes came only with houses begun in 1978 or later. So the attic in a mill-era house holds whatever owners have added since, or nothing. The crew measures it with you before any work starts.

Is my house inside the Granite-Cora-Holt Mills Historic District?

Probably not. The district, listed in 2020, takes in the three mill plants and their grounds, and its boundary leaves out even the stores on East Main Street. The worker houses on Gravel, Pelham and Boundary Streets are described as its surroundings, not as part of it. The state's 2023 commission list shows no historic commission for the town itself. The county commission does oversee a couple of designated landmarks in the township, the Charles T. Holt House among them, but an ordinary house nearby needs no historic approval for attic work.

Could the old insulation in a Haw River attic be vermiculite?

It could: about 40 percent of Haw River's homes predate 1960. If a Haw River attic holds a pebble-like gray-brown or silver-gold fill, leave it undisturbed: the EPA says vermiculite may contain asbestos.

Does attic insulation in Haw River need a permit?

Haw River Town Hall can say whether Alamance County Inspections, the town itself or another office handles permits in Haw River; ask before work starts.
