Northampton County's 2010 survey points to a cluster of front-gable houses on Gate and Ashe Streets, on the east side of town. It uses them to show a type built across the county from the 1920s through the 1950s. These are one-story frame houses, one or two rooms wide and two or two and a half rooms deep, some with a shed at the back, under asphalt or standing-seam metal roofs. A gable facing the street over a narrow plan makes a long, slim attic that drops low along both side walls, and a rear shed adds a shallower space of its own. We bring both to an even depth, with baffles so the eave vents keep breathing.
About 40 percent of Gaston's homes predate 1970; if your joists show above the insulation, ENERGY STAR says to add more insulation.

From 1990 to 2009, about 35 percent of Gaston homes were built to codes below ENERGY STAR's target; check their eaves, where ENERGY STAR says insulation is often thinnest.

Attic insulation in HalifaxNo. The one National Register listing in town is the Gaston School, a flat-roofed brick campus begun about 1950, and it is not a district of houses. The state's 2023 directory of preservation commissions skips Northampton, which rules out a local design board as well. So a homeowner here can plan attic work without any historic review.
Not unless they were begun in 1978 or later. The state statute links insulation standards to occupancy for a new house whose construction started January 1, 1978 or after. About half of the local homes predate 1970, going by the housing numbers on this page. No rule set the insulation in those when they were built, so an attic can hold a lot or almost nothing, and only a measurement in several spots tells which.
It could: about 35 percent of Gaston's homes predate 1960. If a Gaston attic holds a pebble-like gray-brown or silver-gold fill, leave it undisturbed: the EPA says vermiculite may contain asbestos.
