About Garysburg and Its Homes
Garysburg grew at a stop on the Petersburg Railroad, the first line to run in North Carolina, which reached the Roanoke in 1833. Named in 1838 for a hotel keeper who gave the railroad land, it shifted closer to the tracks by the 1840s and was incorporated in 1891.
Garysburg, in Northampton County, fell from 911 people in 2020 to 860 in 2025 (Census Bureau estimates), on 0.94 square miles. That makes Garysburg the second-largest town in Northampton County.

Garysburg Insulation FAQs
Would an old house in Garysburg be on a historic register?
Probably not. Within the town limits, the National Register has just the Methodist church and its cemetery, a Greek Revival frame church from the 1850s. The one house listed nearby is filed as Garysburg vicinity, outside town. The 2010 county survey adds that earlier surveys covering the town were never published, and no preservation commission serves Northampton County on the state's 2023 directory.
The insulation over my old Garysburg ceiling has gone gray in places. Why?
Room air has been seeping up through it. Dust rides that air, and the fibers catch it like a filter, which is why ENERGY STAR reads dirty patches as a sign of a leak below. Garysburg has stood beside the railroad since the 1830s, and an old house can have collected many such gaps. ENERGY STAR names wiring and plumbing holes, the attic hatch and chases around flues among them. We seal those first. The grayed insulation is still okay to use, so it can stay under the new layer.
Does attic insulation in Garysburg need a permit?
Garysburg Town Hall can say whether Northampton County Building Inspections, the town itself or another office handles permits in Garysburg; ask before work starts.
