Attic insulation in WeldonHalifax, the county seat on the Roanoke River, was laid out in 1757, and the state legislature met here from 1779 to 1781. Its oldest blocks are now a state historic site, while the lived-in town south of them mixes houses as old as about 1783 with bungalows and postwar ranches.
Halifax, in Halifax County, fell from 164 people in 2020 to 157 in 2025 (Census Bureau estimates), on 0.46 square miles.

The 2011 nomination for the Town of Halifax Historic District describes older houses that grew backward over time. One began as a T-plan with a rear ell, then gained shed-roofed rooms on both sides of the ell and more small additions beyond. Another has a string of rear additions built around its ell. Every roof section in a house like that can cover its own small attic. Some may be reached only from a separate hatch, and some may be much shallower than the main attic. On install day the crew looks into each one with you, so none is missed.
The nomination says building in the district after the 1920s was modest. It names Colonial Revival houses along West Pittsylvania Street and ranch houses dotted through the blocks, and the few houses built there after 1961 are generally ranches as well. On a ranch the roof pitch is shallow, and the space over the outer walls narrows sharply. ENERGY STAR notes that the eaves sometimes end up with far less insulation than the middle. The soffit vents along that edge must stay open, with baffles keeping a channel for air.
If the joists show above the insulation in a Halifax attic, ENERGY STAR says to add more insulation.
Halifax's center sits about 130 feet above sea level, 10 miles from NOAA's Jackson station, the best match for Halifax. The station's 1991 to 2020 normals average about 3,660 heating and 1,490 cooling degree days a year, so at Halifax's station, heating needs outweigh cooling.
At about 205 housing units, give or take 101, Halifax is too small for the survey to date its houses. For Halifax, the nearest town with solid figures is Weldon, 7 miles off: median year built 1958 and about 70 percent of homes built before 1970.
In Weldon, the nearest town to Halifax with solid figures, about 57 percent of homes heat with electricity.
Air sealing in a Halifax attic covers wire and pipe holes, wall tops, the attic stair and bath fans.

In a Halifax attic, only wet, moldy or animal-soiled insulation is vacuumed out (ENERGY STAR's test), once the cause is fixed, and after mice that Halifax attic is sanitized and deodorized; dry, clean insulation stays.

Attic insulation in EnfieldNo. Both are National Register districts: the state historic site, listed in 1970, and the Town of Halifax Historic District, listed in 2011. The state preservation office is plain that Register status leaves a private owner free to work on the house with private money. Its 2023 roster names a local commission for Weldon only in this county, none for Halifax. Attic insulation and sealing happen inside, out of sight.
The wiring and the chimneys. The district holds seven antebellum houses, and its inventory records interior brick chimneys on a number of the older ones. If any original knob-and-tube circuits survive, ENERGY STAR treats them as a fire risk once insulation covers them, so an electrician sees them before we start. Each chimney that passes up through a ceiling gets its gap closed with sheet aluminum and high-temperature sealant, plus a metal barrier that holds insulation clear of the masonry.
