Attic insulation in FountainFalkland grew on high ground about a mile from the Tar River, a steamboat stop whose post office took the Falkland name in 1838. The town was incorporated in 1887, and its historic district, listed in 2012, holds houses from about 1859 to 1960, most of them from the late 1800s and early 1900s.

The 2012 nomination records several one-story frame houses in Falkland, built from about 1880 to 1915, under a triple-A roof. That is a side gable with a third gable peaking at the center of the front. Several of them have interior brick chimneys with corbelled tops and a gable-roofed ell at the back. Because such a chimney stands inside the walls, it rises through the ceiling and leaves a gap around the brick. We cap that gap with aluminum flashing set in heat-resistant caulk. Bent metal then fences the insulation back, keeping it 2 inches or more from the masonry, the clearance codes usually ask for.
If the joists show above the insulation in a Falkland attic, ENERGY STAR says to add more insulation.
Falkland's center sits about 70 feet above sea level, 8 miles from NOAA's Greenville station, the best match for Falkland. The station's 1991 to 2020 normals average about 2,940 heating and 1,920 cooling degree days a year, so at Falkland's station, heating needs outweigh cooling. Readings change over short distances around Falkland: NOAA's Tarboro 1 S station, 13 miles away, averages about 3,320 heating degree days.

Attic insulation in MacclesfieldNo. The Falkland district joined the National Register in 2012, and according to the state's preservation office, a listing binds a private owner to nothing when the owner pays for the work. Outside changes come under review only where a town sets up a local district through a preservation commission, and the state's 2023 roster names no commission for Falkland. The farms listed nearby, such as Greenwreath, lie outside the town limits.
Dry wood and dry insulation. The nomination notes standing-seam metal roofing on several of the district's older houses. ENERGY STAR treats insulation that feels damp as evidence the roof is letting water in, and that comes before any insulation work. So look for dark stains on the roof boards and matted, wet patches below them. If we find them, a roofer closes the leak first. After that, the wet layer is vacuumed out of the attic and fresh insulation is blown in.
